Secondary Education for Science & Math Story

Summer Vacation Ends. Enthusiasm for New Academic Year

08/19/2009

Welcome back for the Fall 2009 semester as we get underway for an enlightening new year. Our summer sessions were busy with inquiry field immersion courses for our graduate students in partnership with the Mohonk preserve. Now we begin a new year.

Although classes proper begin August 24th, the Secondary Education Department starts the year for student teachers with the student teaching orientation to be held all day on August 28th, 20009 in the Lecture Center. Our secondary education students spend the day preparing for the final semester of their undergraduate work as practice teachers in the local schools.

Partnerships with area middle, junior, and high schools provide us with the opportunity to work with educators who mentor our teacher candidates during a rigorous sixteen week program where pre-service teachers become the gifted inquiry-based facilitators of learning that our schools need today.

Preparing our future teachers to be leaders in the field of ‘engaging students actively in learning’ is a major goal of Secondary Education, and continues to fulfill every semester.
