In addition to degree requirements, candidates must meet several New York State certification requirements. For provisional certification, these include:
- Attending a two-hour workshop on recognizing and reporting symptoms of child abuse and neglect.
- Satisfying the New York State Certification Testing requirements.
Tests include:
Liberal Arts and Sciences Test, Assessment of Teaching Skills - Written, Language Proficiency Assessment (For ESOL and Bilingual, Language Proficiency Assessment in English - oral; for Bilingual, Language Proficiency Assessment in Spanish, oral and written.)
Additionally, for permanent certification, the following requirements must be met:
- Successful completion of the Content Specialty Test and the Assessment of Teaching Skills - Performance.
- For Permanent ESOL certification, satisfactory completion of a one academic year supervised internship in a public or non-public school.
