PLEASE NOTE:

The college will be suspending the Master of Science in Education and Master of Arts in Teaching for French, Spanish, Earth Science, Chemistry and Mathematics. program because of cuts to the New Paltz operating budget. No new students are being admitted. Students currently matriculated in these programs will be given an opportunity to complete their degree program. The Department of Secondary Education offers instruction leading to New York State initial and professional certification to teach the following subjects in 7-12: English, foreign languages (French, German, and Spanish), mathematics, the sciences (biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics), and social studies. Certificates for teaching in New York State are automatically accepted for teaching in many other states.

All secondary education curriculum students complete a major in their discipline that is comparable to the corresponding major in the liberal arts curriculum.

Special research interests of the secondary education faculty include microcomputer applications of software for teaching, problem solving, curriculum and instruction in the secondary school, evaluation in education, mathematics education and science education.
