The Department of Secondary Education offers instruction leading to New York State initial and professional certification to teach the following subjects in 7-12: English, foreign languages (French and Spanish), mathematics, the sciences (biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics), and social studies. Certificates for teaching in New York State are automatically accepted for teaching in many other states.

All secondary education curriculum students complete a major in their discipline that is comparable to the corresponding major in the liberal arts curriculum.

Special research interests of the secondary education faculty include microcomputer applications of software for teaching, problem solving, curriculum and instruction in the secondary school, evaluation in education, mathematics education and science education.
