The definition of sculpture has become complex as new artistic pursuits have challenged the conventions of the medium and the profession. Materials and processes are seen as having meaning beyond visual application, and studio practice is often directed by content rather than medium. Aesthetic concerns are grounded within social or political issues. These new attitudes have broadened the boundaries and reshaped the framework of sculptural activity. While conditions of form, time and space continue to be of primary concern to many sculptors, issues of context, material culture, gender, and the characterization of the body determine a great deal of what is called sculpture today. The Sculpture program, both undergraduate and graduate, embraces and cultivates this diversity and supports sculptural practice that encompasses installation, intervention, performance, sound, and video as well as more traditional approaches to sculpture.
