HR Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship Recipient Announced

07/22/2008

The Mid-Hudson Human Resources Association (MHHRA) and the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz are pleased to announce that Marisel Lewis has been selected as the recipient of the 2008-2009 HR Leader of Tomorrow Scholarship.  This $750 scholarship was established in 2006 by MHHRA to recognize and encourage SUNY New Paltz students who are interested in pursuing a career in the profession of human resource (HR) management.  Preference is given to applicants who are active student members of the Management Association, the SUNY New Paltz student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

"MHHRA is pleased to be associated with the SUNY New Paltz Management Association and is proud of the student chapter member's and advisor's achievements," said Shaun Hoff, MHHRA Student Chapter Liaison for SUNY New Paltz. "Marisel is an outstanding example of a high quality and dedicated student who should have a bright future in the field of human resources."

Marisel is an undergraduate SUNY New Paltz School of Business student entering her senior year who is majoring in Management. She is an active executive board member of the Management Association (MA) and a national student chapter member of SHRM. Her leadership roles with MA have included serving as the MA’s Finance Chair, Merit Award Chair, and Director of the chapter’s “In the Office” workshop series that took place during the 2006-2007 academic year.  She was elected to serve as MA’s Merit Award Chair for the upcoming 2008-2009 year as well.  Her career goal is to enter the human resource management profession.

"I am truly thankful to be the recipient of this scholarship.  Working with the Management Association has aided me in building my time management and organizational skills, by carrying the responsibility of Merit Award Chair and it feels wonderful to be acknowledged for my work and desire to seek a career in the human resources field,” said Lewis.  “Once again, I am really grateful, and I am looking forward to continue working with the Management Association, as we continue to spread knowledge of the human resources field and SHRM."

Kristin Backhaus, MA chapter advisor, describes Marisel as “a promising future leader.  She has the skills, intelligence and capacity to have a successful career in human resources.  She has good interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.”
