Ann Barber Smith is principal of Ann Barber Consulting, a public relations, and economic and community development consulting firm she started since she stepped down as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Orange County Partnership in June 2001.
Her work as a consultant has been focused in the Hudson Valley and has included such projects as primary data research for the Orange County Citizens Foundation's Quality of Life Report, public relations and marketing planning for the re-branding of a multi-venue resort, public relations coordination during the planning phase for a major commercial development project, a marketing study for the Ashokan Field Campus, a unit of SUNY New Paltz, and various public relations and site investigation activities for several real estate developers.
Ms Smith was President and CEO of the Orange County Partnership for five years, from 1996 - 2001. Prior to joining the Partnership, she spent 15 years in the banking industry, with Chase Manhattan Bank and Bank of Montreal in New York City, and with Fleet Bank in Newburgh and Greenwich, CT. She provided financing to large, multinational corporations, mid-sized and small businesses as well as to individuals.
Prior to banking, Ms. Barber was in the non-profit field for 11 years, consulting for agencies and schools for the blind in the US through the National Accreditation Council headquartered in NYC.
Ms. Barber holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College in New London, CT, a Masters in community development from Hunter College School of Social Work, and an MBA from Fordham University.
Ms. Barber has participated on various committees of the Orange County Citizens Foundation, and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Orange County Workforce Investment Board and Healthy Orange. As a member of the New Paltz Planning Board in the mid-90's, she participated in updating the Town's comprehensive plan. Ms. Smith currently is on the Board of Trustees of the Huguenot Historical Society and is its Treasurer. She serves on the Business Advisory Council of the SUNY New Paltz School of Business and is chairman of its Internship Committee. Ms. Barber is also on the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Orange County and the Ulster County Development Corp. She was selected as a Woman of Achievement of Orange County for 2001 by the Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council and the YWCA of Orange County and received the Dean's Award of Excellence from the SUNY New Paltz School of Business in 2006.
