Albert K. Smiley
Mohonk Mountain House
Bert Smiley is President and Chief Executive Officer of Mohonk Mountain House, a 265-room National Historic Landmark resort located in New Paltz, New York. Mr. Smiley spent his early summers at Mohonk learning the resort business on the job.
Mr. Smiley graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Mathematics from Syracuse University and joined the staff of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, where he did research in computer science. Subsequently, Mr. Smiley earned a Ph.D. in Economics at Princeton University and was awarded the Harold W. Dodds Fellowship in recognition of distinguished work in economics and a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Princeton Center for Energy and Environmental Studies. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as Director of Research for the Economic Analysis Group of the United States Department of Justice, and received the Justice Department Special Achievement Award and the Antitrust Division Award of Merit.
Mr. Smiley has served for 41 years on the Board of Directors of Mohonk Mountain House and is currently Chairman of its Executive Committee. In addition, he is a Director of the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association and the Mohonk Preserve, a member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association Resort Committee, the Advisory Boards of the Hudson Valley Division of M&T Bank and Oakwood Friends School, the SUNY New Paltz Business Advisory Council, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and a Fellow of the Culinary Institute of America. His hobbies are mountain hiking and scuba diving.
