An active business professional, Joan Lawrence-Bauer has more than 35 years of field experience in public communication, business ownership and management, and teaching positions. Having started her career with a retail department store, she has worked in and with health care facilities, insurance firms, retail and direct mail sales concerns, real estate sales development, and manufacturing, distribution, and fulfillment operations. Ms. Lawrence-Bauer's special area of business interest have been the travel and tourism industry where she spent more than 17 years in management, marketing, and promotion and non-profit management and operation where she's spent 10 years. In addition to expertise in business strategy and marketing plan development, she has produced and executed a wide variety of business restructuring, advertising, promotion, sales, public image, and communication campaigns.
Having worked with private and public sector clients as well as non-profit agencies, Ms. Lawrence-Bauer's expertise includes: operational marketing balancing advertising, public relations, promotion and sales; crisis management and intervention; short and long term strategic plans for start ups and re-structuring; internal and external communication; and public relations/public image work. The foundation of her success has been strong grounding in academic theory coupled with practical application of those theories to a wide range of real world business situations.
As a paid professional, teacher, community leader, and frequent volunteer, Ms. Lawrence-Bauer has staged numerous conferences and special events, taught a wide variety of workshops and courses, and has established and implemented internships and mentoring programs for other business professionals as well as for high school and college students. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (summa cum laude) in Public Communication from State University of New York at New Paltz and has completed course work for a Master of Arts degree at the University at Albany. She has lectured extensively in Communication and Media studies at the SUNY New Paltz and Ulster County Community College. Her research and development of a health communication campaign, co-authored with Dr. Mary Kahl, has been published in a textbook, Evaluating Women's Health Messages, edited by R. L. Parrott and C.M. Condit. An award-winning journalist, Ms. Lawrence-Bauer writes "Down to Business," a weekly newspaper column for the Catskill Mountain News.
Ms. Lawrence-Bauer is the Director of Communication and Resource Development for the Rural Ulster Preservation Company. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Margaretville Hospital and an active mentor to business students, always available to talk with them about their goals and how to achieve them.
