The School of Business is proud of its accomplished alumni and is constantly seeking ways to link its current students with successful alumni. By participating in the Alumni Mentor program, you can establish a meaningful relationship with an alumnus who has been through your same experience at New Paltz. The earlier you begin establishing a network of contacts in the working world, the better your chance of finding an internship or job placement. Read on to learn more about this great resource available to School of Business students.
Program Objectives
- Provide a link between current students and alumni that provides meaningful support to the student and a rewarding relationship for the alumnus.
- Provide a vital link between the School of Business and alumni so the School can obtain stakeholder feedback in efforts leading to continuous improvement of programs.
- Provide a link to potential internships at companies where alumni are employed.
- Strengthen recruitment efforts by maintaining relationships with alumni.
- Provide and maintain a positive link between alumni, the School and the University.
Overall Program Guidelines
- Alumni and undergraduate participants will all be on a voluntary basis.
- Alumnus/mentee meet or speak a minimum of three times a year - once during the fall, once during the spring, and once during the summer. Please note these are minimums. Topics to discuss include, current major, course load, extra-curricular activities, internship opportunities, time-management skills, and general advice.
- At the end of the year the alumnus and mentee decide if they wish to continue to work together or can choose to work with someone else.
Alumni Mentor/Student Assignments
Once a list of volunteers is compiled for students and alumni, students are matched with alumni, first on the basis of major of the student and field of employment of the alumnus. Once this criterion is exhausted, matches are made on a random basis.
Message to Alumni: It is possible for you to be a mentor to more than one student. If you choose this option, please contact Aaron Hines via e-mail at mba@newpaltz.edu.
Time Frame
The program begins during the fall semester and ends at the beginning of the following fall semester. At the end of the year, the mentor and student decide if they wish to continue for another year or if they would like to work with someone else the following year.
