Office of Student Activities and Union Services

Annual Student Club & Leadership Awards

Each year, the Office of Student Activities and Union Services hosts the Student Club and Leadership Awards. This is an opportunity to take the time for peers and campus community members to recognize the achievements of their peers, organizations, and advisers. A panel of judges (students, staff and faculty) rate and evaluate the nominations. Those who meet the minimal standards of each award are honored at a ceremony at the end of the spring semester.

The Office of Student Activities and Union Services is pleased to announce that we are seeking nominations for outstanding achievement in co-curricular experiences for the 2014-2015 academic year. Our student clubs and organizations do amazing work to enhance campus life at New Paltz and fill the campus community with pride and energy. Not only do our students gain positive experiences from being involved, but their co-curricular activities gain them valuable skills and abilities that complement the classroom experience and mission of the college.

The student club or student leader nominees must be part of club or organization recognized by any of the following governing bodies: Student Association, United Greek Association, Residence Hall Student Association, or recognized directly by a University department. For verification purposes, groups seeking nomination that are recognized by a University department must also provide a letter of support from the department chair stating that the club is recognized by the appropriate university department.

Outstanding Promotional Award Does your organization understand the importance of promoting itself and its programs? Is it inclusive of the campus community in doing so? Promotion is one of the keys to great programs and great organizations. This award will be awarded to a recognized student club/organization that has placed an emphasis on just that. This award will not necessarily judge the quality of the artwork, but on creativity and efforts to promote the organization. Please submit artwork and/or sample promotional items (photos of items accepted) for judges to review.
Outstanding Promotion of Diversity Award Diversity is the key to a vital and flourishing New Paltz community. Has your organization coordinated events focused on diversity and increasing our collective awareness as a campus? This award honors a recognized student club/organization that has devoted itself to bringing together the diverse elements of SUNY New Paltz to celebrate our differences through intellectual and personal discovery.
Outstanding Community Service Award Community service is one of the ways that clubs and organizations give back to the New Paltz community at-large. Perhaps your organization has volunteered time in community projects, or has coordinated its own event or program that benefits others. This award honors the recognized student club/organization that has represented the ideals of the College by striving to improve the quality of life of others in our community.
Outstanding Scholarship Award The key to any successful club/organization is the ability to balance co-curricular life with academics. This award will be given to the recognized student club/organization that can do just that. The group must demonstrate ability to balance co-curricular life with academics, and demonstrate that it values scholarly excellence from its members. This award will be judged on the methods used to promote scholarship through programs, incentives, and/or recognition.
Outstanding Recruitment Award The ability of a club to achieve its mission is directly related to its membership; a club that can recruit participatory and engaged members is one that will have a lasting impact on our campus. This award will be judged on promotion techniques, creativity, visibility at recruitment activities/events and steps taken to utilize members' skills and talents. This category is open to all recognized student clubs/organizations.
New Club of the Year Being the new kid on the block is hard, especially with so many great clubs around. Eligible only to recognized student clubs/organizations that were founded between April 1, 2014 and March 25, 2015, this award was created to recognize the outstanding efforts of a new club/organization who, in a short time, has achieved great success. This award will be evaluated in terms of programming, publicity, recruitment of new members, the ability to fill a needed niche, and overall presence on campus.
Club of the Year What makes your organization the best on campus this year? Maybe you hosted an outstanding program for the campus, maybe you increased your membership 100%, or maybe you set new goals for your group and achieved them. This is your chance to brag to us about what makes you the best! This category is open to all recognized student clubs/organizations who have contributed greatly to our campus community. Two awards will be awarded in this category: the Small Club of the Year and the Large Club of the Year.
Club President of the Year Being the president of a club is hard work; exhibiting outstanding leadership with grace, pride, and advocacy is harder. This award is presented to the student club/organization president that has shown great leadership while being a positive role model who has made a lasting impact on the organization. The recipient will not necessarily be judged by the overall success of the organization, but by his/her leadership and positive impact on the organization. A minimum GPA of 2.500 is required for the award recipient. The Office of Student Activities and Union Services will verify GPA requirements.
Club Leader of the Year Clubs and organizations provide students opportunities to gain leadership skills and experiences. Do you know a club leader who makes a positive impact, is dedicated, and is exemplary in their leadership? The recipient of this award is the student club/organization leader (not the president) who has shown exemplary initiative in these goals. A minimum GPA of 2.500 is required for the award recipient. The Office of Student Activities and Union Services will verify GPA requirements.
General Club Member of the Year
Do you have a general club/organization member who is always there for your organization, but is not a member of the executive board? This is your opportunity to recognize that person for their hard work and dedication. Perhaps it is the person who always volunteers for a task and sees it through. Perhaps it is the person that always helps to clean up after an event. Take this opportunity to show that person that you recognize their efforts with a nomination for this award. A minimum GPA of 2.500 is required for the award recipient. The Office of Student Activities and Union Services will verify GPA requirements.
Club Advisor of the Year Behind many of the great clubs and organizations at New Paltz is a club/organization advisor. Good advisors show a balance of supporting a club without running it. They are positive role models in these endeavors and outside of them as well. Does your club or organization have an advisor that fits the bill? Tell us how your organization's advisor is exemplary. Only club/organization advisors that are employed by and/or have formal agreements with SUNY New Paltz are eligible for this award.
Event/Program of the Year Our clubs and organizations coordinate and execute hundreds of events and programs that benefit our campus every year. This is your chance to tell us about yours! Nominations will be evaluated based on attendance, use of budget, promotion, appeal to the campus culture, how it addressed a need within our community, and overall success. This award is open to recognized student clubs/organizations that hosted a program or event open to the entire campus between April 1, 2014 and March 25, 2015. Two separate awards will be determined by the judges out of submitted nominations: Event of the Year (large-scale) and Program of the Year (small-scale). Please also submit a budget overview of the event and a detailed description of the event/program from beginning to end.
