MUSIC & IMAGERY (MI): Applications in the Medical Setting
A 30-credit CMTE course including didactic and experiential material

This course focuses on the Music and Imagery (MI) technique and its applications in the medical setting with pediatric and adult patients. MI is an adaptation of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. Included are assessment, treatment goals, and procedures to reduce stress and pain. Students will develop skills to write music and imagery scripts for relaxation to reduce anxiety indicators and increase desired behaviors.

Professional music therapists who want to learn to use the Music and Imagery (MI) technique and its applications in the medical setting with pediatric and adult patients.
What you will learn:
- the basic principles of MI technique and the fundamentals of The Bonny Method of GIM. (CBMT Scope of Practice I.C.13.14/II.A.3.E.)
- techniques that focus on treatment for stress, anxiety, or pain with patients in medical settings.
- methods for quick assessment and the development of effective, spontaneous, client centered inductions and music to stimulate imagery.
- skills to design and implement individualized and group sessions of music and imagery technique.
- protocol to document patient responses to treatment (CBMT Scope of Practice III.A.1.2.3.7)
About the presenter: Maria Montserrat Gimeno, Ed.D., MT-BC, FAMI
Dr Gimeno is an Assistant Professor in the Music Therapy Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. She is known nationally and internationally for her research on the use of MI in medical settings and has taught MI courses in the United States, China, Spain, and Finland. In volunteer work at a local hospital, she uses the MI technique to help patients in the oncology support center. Dr. Gimeno serves on the Educational Committee of the Association for Music and Imagery.

By train, Amtrack and Metro North have service from New York City to Poughkeepsie. Adirondack Trailways Buses run from Port Authority in New York City directly to New Paltz.
