Declaring a Major
In order to declare a major in psychology, students must: 
  • complete General Psychology (80272)
  • have a GPA of at least 2.5
A maximum of five transfer courses can be counted toward the major if you declared before June 1, 2005.
A maximum of six transfer courses can be counted toward the major if you declared after June 1, 2005.
At least five psychology courses applied to the major must be taken at SUNY New Paltz.

When you are ready to declare your major in psychology, bring a copy of your transcripts to the Peer Advising Office (JFT 316) for help. The Department Chair (or designee) will assign a faculty advisor to you and sign your Declaration of Major Form which is to be returned to Records and Registration in HAB 19. Declaration of Major Forms are available in the Peer Advising Office (JFT 316), the Psychology Department Office (JFT 314), and Records and Registration (HAB 19).

Declaring a Minor
In order to declare a minor in psychology, students must:

  • complete General Psychology (80272)
A maximum of three transfer courses can be counted toward the minor.
At least three psychology courses applied to the minor must be taken at SUNY New Paltz.

How To Declare
When you are ready to declare your major or minor, bring a copy of your transcripts to the Psychology Advising Office (JFT 316) for help. The Department Chair (or designee) will assign a faculty advisor to you and sign your Declaration of Major or Minor form, which is to be returned to Records and Registration in HAB 19. Declaration of Major or Minor forms are available from the Psychology Advising Office (JFT 316), the Psychology Department (JFT 314), and Records and Registration (HAB 19).
