Undergraduate

checking negativesThere are two degrees offered by the Art Department which serve the needs of students who wish to concentrate their study in photography. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree combines the most in-depth study in photography and art studio courses (69 credits), with art history (12 credits) and liberal arts (30 credits). The Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Art offers a more diverse experience in photography and art studio courses (45 credits), coupled with 18 credits in art history and 60 credits in liberal arts courses. Both degrees prepare the student for a career in photography, with the BFA offering a more focused study of photography and the BS offering a broader liberal arts education. The BFA is essential preparation for students intending to pursue graduate studies in photography as well as offering the intensive experience needed by those intending to be exhibiting artists. Both degrees offer experience suitable to students preparing for a career in commercial work, graduate study in areas outside of fine art photography, or work in galleries, technical positions, or arts organizations.

The B.S. Degree Program

Students accepted into the Art Department are automatically enrolled as Visual Arts majors in the B.S. program. The B.S. degree requires 33 credits of studio electives beyond the freshman year, some or all of which may be taken in photography. It is strongly advised that students concentrating in photography while taking the B.S. degree complete at least 3 intermediate photography courses and at least one of the two capstone courses, 09450 The Document or 09451 Contemporary Issues. In each of those courses, students produce an original body of work which contributes to a cohesive portfolio. Students in the B.S. program graduate with a Visual Arts degree, with their transcript documenting the extent of their course work in photography.

The BFA degree program

After taking required freshman courses, Basic Photography and at least two intermediate level courses, a student may apply for the B.F.A. major in photography. This application review, which is based on a portfolio and written application submitted by the student, takes place shortly after midterm each semester. If accepted, a student must take all of the photography courses listed below as well as departmental and college requirements. After completing almost all photography courses, the B.F.A. student applies for admission to Senior Studio I. This application procedure is comprised of a written proposal supported by related examples of work accomplished by the student. B.F.A. students take 09452 Senior Studio I and 09453 Senior Studio II in their final two semesters and the Senior Studio projects are presented in an exhibition on campus. B.F.A. students are also required to document their thesis work in slides and to write a paper elucidating their ideas for completion of the degree.
