Undergraduate Admissions
Application to the BFA program is usually made during the sophomore or junior year, after a student has completed Basic Painting and at least one intermediate level drawing or painting class. Admission is based on a review of studio work, transcript to date, statement of interest and intent, and a personal interview. Intellectual abilities, breadth of experience, depth of commitment, potential for growth, and capacity for independent study are all considered, along with a visual assessment of the student’s work. Admission reviews typically take place each semester, after midterm and prior to the pre-registration period.

Graduate Admissions
Admission to the program is based on a portfolio (slides or CD), undergraduate transcript, written proposal or statement of intent, letters of recommendation, and, when possible, a personal interview. Intellectual abilities, breadth of experience, depth of commitment, potential for growth, and capacity for independent study are all considered, along with a visual assessment of the applicant’s portfolio. We favor work that indicates the beginnings of a distinctive individual voice – the student shows awareness of contemporary issues and art history, but the work is neither overly trendy nor heavily encumbered by the work of past artists. Advanced-level painting and drawing ability are required, along with conceptual rigor and a compelling vision. Upon acceptance, in-depth studio investigation is expected, leading to a cohesive body of work that, ideally, will extend the boundaries of the field. Students are encouraged to take risks that will lead them beyond the scope of their present abilities.
