Dean of the School of Science & Engineering

Daniel Jelski became Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at New Paltz in August 2007.

The School of Science and Engineering was established in 2001 and includes the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Geology, Mathematics and Physics. It is also the home of the college’s interdisciplinary Environmental Geochemical Sciences program. At New Paltz, opportunities for research are an important part of a student’s professional development. Therefore, many students and faculty in the School of Science and Engineering are actively engaged in a wide range of research activities. These collaborations often result in publications and presentations at regional, national and international levels.

In addition to completing senior design projects, many engineering and computer science students at New Paltz participate in internships at the many Hudson Valley companies specializing in fabrication, solar energy, custom tool manufacturing and pharmaceutical equipment supply.

As dean, Jelski’s first task at SUNY New Paltz was to update the Web presence of the school, which can be viewed at www.newpaltz.edu/science. The school’s Web pages now detail all the great work that its students accomplish on a regular basis.

Prior to his arrival at SUNY New Paltz, Jelski was professor and chair of the Chemistry Department at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN, from 2000 to 2007. There he developed and implemented a biochemistry program and increased the quality and quantity of undergraduate research at the private institution.

From 1996 to 1997, Jelski was a Fulbright scholar at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, where in addition to teaching chemistry, he supervised the research project of a graduate-level student.

Jelski also taught chemistry at the State University of New York College at Fredonia for 12 years. During his tenure at the college, Jelski published numerous papers, won grants from such organizations as the National Science Foundation and the American Chemical Society, and developed and maintained collaborations with scientists from around the world.

Jelski received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1979. He earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1985.

Jelski lives in Gardiner, NY.
