Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS)

This post master’s program consists of 18 credits leading to a Certificate of Advanced Study.  It is designed to meet the needs of masters’ prepared nurses who wish to advance their careers in the Adult Health clinical specialty. The program meets American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) eligibility requirements for the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Adult Health board certification examination. Upon successful examination the credential is Adult CNS, Board Certified (ACNS, BC).

The CAS admission and program requirements are in accord with the graduate school.

Admission requirements

1. Graduation from an accredited master’s program with a concentration in nursing and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
2. Master’s level courses with a minimum grade of B in each of the following advanced practice core curriculum courses or equivalent:

NUR501 Advanced Health Assessment
NUR701 Applied Pathophysiology for Advanced Nursing
NUR702 Pharmacological Management in Advanced Nursing Practice

3. New York State RN licensure
4. Ability to complete clinical requirements
5. 3 letters of recommendation
6. Personal Interview

Program requirements

1. File a plan of study during the first semester after matriculation. Matriculation must  be completed prior to completing 9 credits.
2. Complete prescribed course work and other requirements within five years from date of matriculation.
3. Maintain a cumulative average of 3.00 or better, with no more than two grades below B-.

The curriculum is organized in such a way that students can opt to finish the program in either 2 semesters or 4 semesters of study.  Each of the lecture courses are 3 credit offerings, each of the practicum courses are 6 credit offerings. Students can opt to carry between 3 and 9 credits per semester.

NUR535: Acutely Ill Adult/Older Adult - 3 cr (fall)
Course Description: Provides the clinical nurse specialist student with the foundation to comprehensively assess and plan interventions in selected acute health deviations across the adult life span. Evidence based literature is incorporated into plans of care.

NUR522: Chronically Ill Adult/Older Adult - 3 cr (spring)
Course Description: Provides the clinical nurse specialist student with the foundation to comprehensively assess and plan interventions in selected chronic health deviations across the adult life span. Evidence based literature is incorporated into plans of care.

NUR733:  Practicum Acutely Ill Adult/Older Adult - 6 cr (fall)
Pre-requisite or co-requisite: NUR535
Course Description: The roles of the clinical nurse specialist are enacted in the provision of care to adults experiencing acute health deviations. Evidence based strategies are incorporated into advanced practice nursing interventions.

NUR722: Practicum Chronically Ill Adult/Older Adult - 6 cr (spring)
Prerequisite or co-requisite: NUR522
Course Description: The roles of the clinical nurse specialist are enacted in the provision of care to adults experiencing chronic health deviations. Evidence based strategies are incorporated into advanced practice nursing interventions.

Note: The student must complete a minimum of 500 clinical hours in order to sit for the ANCC Clinical Nurse Specialist Adult Health examination.
