Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to try out in order to be on the team?
Yes, we have tryouts at the beginning of each semester, but we take all riding levels. This is more of a placement test, and you can join anytime during the semester. Just come to a meeting!

Where do you ride?
We ride at Lucky C Stables. Located in New Paltz, about 10 minutes from campus the stable contains a variety of horses that riders of all abilities are able to use. Our coaches are Susan Clark and Kristy Conner.

How much do lessons cost?
$30 for an hour group lesson and $35 for a 1/2 hour private lesson. However, if you ride twice a week it only costs $50 for that week.

How much do shows cost?
You must pay an annual membership fee of $20 to compete in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association). After that, you pay $25 per class. However, you can only ride in as many as 2 classes (one flat and one jumping class) per show, so the most you would have to pay per show is $50.

Do I need previous riding or horse experience?
No. We will teach you about grooming and tacking and you can take a riding lesson at any level. Once you're comfortable with riding and our coach thinks that you are ready, you can also show (compete) with us at any level. Visit the show section for more information.

Do I need to own my own horse?
No. For lessons, we ride the school horses at Lucky C. At the shows, we ride the horses where the show is being held.

What kind of attire do I need?
For lessons, if you don't have riding britches, you can wear jeans or leggings. You must have some sort of boot/shoe with a definite heel. The barn can provide you with a hunt cap (helmet) if you do not have your own. For shows, you do need the full show attire, although some things, like gloves, can be shared.

What exactly is the IHSA?
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association is the organization that sponsors our shows. It is made up of colleges around the country divided in to various zones and regions depending on location. Their website can be accessed by clicking here.

What if I don't want to compete in shows?
If you choose not to compete on our team, you can still take lessons and participate in other activities with the club. However, we encourage you to show your support and attend a few shows.
