
Presentations, ExhibitionsThe Teaching and Learning Center (College Hall 113) and the University Writing Board will sponsor a faculty forum on Writing in the Disciplines from 9 a.m. to noon on Dec. 2. Jonathan Monroe, professor of comparative literature, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and director of the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines at Cornell University, will give the presentation. Monroe has edited two books written by Cornell faculty: "Local Knowledges, Local Practices: Writing in the Disciplines at Cornell" and "Writing and Revising in the Disciplines." Both texts are in the center for review. Thomas Sarrantonio (Art) will present an exhibition of recent work, titled "Field Paintings" at the Albert Shahinian Gallery, 196 Main St., Poughkeepsie, NY from Nov. 19 to Dec. 31. Alice Andrews (Psychology) read an excerpt from her novel "Trine Erotic" at Ariel Booksellers' farewell party, Nov. 11, along with other local authors. She was also a guest speaker along with Jerry Persaud (Communication and Media) at FMLA's 4thannual "The F-Word: This Is What a Feminist Looks Like," Oct. 26; and a guest on Doug Grunther's Roundtable/WDST-FM, Nov. 13. Her latest issue of Entelechy: Mind & Culture at www.entelechyjournal.com (no. 6) came out in late October, and features a biofiction contest with novelist Rebecca Goldstein ("Properties of Light; The Mind-Body Problem") as judge. EtceteraThe State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) is under way and employees are donating by submitting pledge forms to the SEFA Committee on campus, headed by Lorraine DuBois (Purchasing). If you would like to help out, submit your form to HAB 307 by the deadline of Dec. 12. Once you have pledged by payroll deduction to your favorite agency, you will be automatically entered into drawings throughout the 2006 calendar year. You could win a certificate or a gift donated by area businesses to assist in raising funds. Last year more than $18,000 was raised for charitable agencies. Students in the NewsErnelle Fife (English) mentored seniors Megan Bodenschatz, April French, and Jenna Rey Greer at Past Watchful Dragons, the international conference on writer and scholar C. S. Lewis held in Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 3-5. All three students presented papers on Lewis's novel "Till We Have Faces." Bodenschatz's paper was titled "Psychomachias in Till We Have Faces and George MacDonald's Phantastes"; French's paper was titled, "The Mask and the Shadow: Similarities of Story and Theme between Till We Have Faces and The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux"; and Rey Greer's paper was titled, "Merlin and Mentors." Professor Fife also presented a paper, "Lewis's Four Loves in Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray." |
