College waives fees for employees enrolled in courses

Campus employees do not have to pay some fees associated with taking courses at New Paltz, thanks to a decision by the college president and vice presidents to waive the fees.

The decision has been in effect since Dec. 17, 2004 and was announced in an all-fs e-mail. It applies to full-time employees only, including Research Foundation employees. Several employees have taken advantage of this benefit, in addition to availing themselves of the tuition assistance programs offered through the unions and the campus. The fees include the technology fee ($130/semester), the health fee ($87.50/semester; $7.30/credit) and the athletics fee ($120/semester; $10/credit).

Over the years, many New Paltz employees have chosen to improve themselves by taking courses at New Paltz, said Vice President for Administration and Finance, Johanna D'Aleo, who herself earned a master's degree while working at the college. "We wanted to show our support for employees who take on the challenge of advancing their education and their careers."

The college cannot waive the Student Activities fee ($100/semester for full-time students; $8.35/credit) because it is administered by the New Paltz Student Association. Nor can the college waive the College Fee ($12.50/semester for full-time students; 85 cents/credit), administered by SUNY System Administration.

To take advantage of this benefit, employees need to have a waiver form certified by Human Resources and then take it with them to Student Accounts where they can adjust your account. For more information about fee waivers or to learn about tuition waiver programs at New Paltz, contact Human Resources at x3170.
