Awards, Honors, Appointments and RecognitionDr. Heinz Meng (Biology, Emeritus) was awarded the Seventh Annual Thom Scheuer Land Stewardship Award from the Mohonk Preserve on Oct. 15. A Distinguished Professor, Dr. Meng is an internationally recognized ornithologist who led the effort to bring peregrine falcons back from the edge of extinction nationwide. The award was presented at the 7th Annual New Paltz Climbing Film Festival, held at SUNY New Paltz. Once common here, the peregrine falcon nearly disappeared from the U.S. due to widespread use of the chemical DDT in the 1950s and 1960s. The first to breed this endangered species in captivity, Dr. Meng participated in the banding of peregrine on the ridge in 1955 and helped release captive-bred peregrine locally in the 1970s. After an absence of more than 40 years, peregrine returned to the ridge on their own to nest in 1998. Named one of the 100 "Champions of Conservation" of the 20th century by Audubon magazine, Dr. Meng joined the faculty of SUNY New Paltz in 1951 as professor of Biology, where he taught until his retirement in 2002. Other Interesting EndeavorsStudents from Germany, Mexico and France who are participating in the Institute for International Business (IIB) program packed their belongings to leave New Paltz and journey to New York City in order to begin working full-time, two-month internships. This fall, students accepted challenging internships with world-renowned companies, such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Edelman and Benetton USA. Other big draws this semester were entertainment industry giants MTV Networks and SONY BMG. The Institute for International Business prepares English-speaking international students for the global business environment. Students study business for eight weeks alongside American and other international students at SUNY New Paltz, and then move to New York City to work for eight weeks at an internship with leading companies.
