What's New?Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. '66 to be honored during Alumni Reunion Weekend
The Sojourner Truth Library will sponsor an exhibit through October in tribute to Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr., class of '66. The exhibit will be in a case located between the flags in the Main Reading Room, located to the left after the entrance to the library. This exhibit is held in conjunction with Alumni Weekend, which will honor Ahlmeyer's memory at a special ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the Hopfer House that will include members of his 1965 championship soccer team. Friends and family of the soccer team will be in attendance to celebrate 40 years since their landmark victory in the fall of 1965. A tribute to Ahlmeyer Jr. will also be presented. All are welcome. Then, at 5:30 p.m., the class of 1965- Delphic-1965 Soccer Team Dinner will be held in Almeyer's honor. Ahlmeyer was killed in action, while serving as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam, less than a year after graduating from New Paltz. While a student at New Paltz, Ahlmeyer studied education, belonged to the Delphic Fraternity and was a member of the softball team, the swim team and the 1965 championship soccer team. Thirty-eight years ago, following his death, his friends and teammates created a permanent memorial in his name, "The Heinz Ahlmeyer Award." This award is presented every spring by the Department of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation to one student athlete "whose dedication, perseverance and service beyond self has been an inspiration to both his/her teammates and fellow students."
