Members of the campus community representing the faculty, students and the administration met recently with State Sen. John Bonacic and State Assembly Member Kevin Cahill '77 to include them in planning for the renovation of the Student Union Building.

At the meeting, an update was given to Bonacic and Cahill on the progress and preliminary plan. It was explained that after a feasibility and engineering study, the administration will have a better idea of the scope of the project; however, after several meetings with students, there is already discussion about an expansion, which would include a large gathering space.

In addition, RJ Partington III (Student Association President) said that a top priority was to find more appropriate space for programming needs, such as game rooms, lounges and meeting rooms for student clubs and organizations.

Other areas of discussion included looking at the potential for resource space for commuter students and additional lounge space for graduate students.

Last spring, Bonacic and Cahill lead the effort to secure a $10 million special legislative appropriation for the project, which is the largest of its kind in the college's history, and is the first significant infusion of state money dedicated to the SUB since it was built 34 years ago for a smaller student population.
