Narcyz Roztocki (Business) and Heinz Roland Weistoffer (Virginia Commonwealth University) presented and published a paper, titled "A Framework for IT Investment Evaluation in Emerging Economies," in the Proceeding of the Eleventh Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2005), Omaha, Neb., Aug. 11-14, 2005, pp. 742-748.

Peter Kaufman (Sociology) published an article, "Middle-Class Social Reproduction: The Activation and Negotiation of Structural Advantages" in the June issue of Sociological Forum.

Howard Good (Communication & Media) has an article, "The Way of the Kayak," about the life lessons that can be drawn from kayaking, in the Sept. 2005 issue of Paddler magazine. Good also has a poem, "In Memoriam," in the Sept. 2005 issue of the e-zine The Sidewalk's End.

Matthias Bernet (Geological Sciences) co-authored a paper titled "Diagenetic History of Triassic Sandstone From the Beacon Supergroup in Central Victoria Land, Antarctica," which appeared in the September issue of the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics.

Edward J. Renehan Jr. '80 (Political Science) has been made a member of PEN American Center. The standard qualification for a writer to join PEN is publication of two or more books of a literary character, or one book generally acclaimed to be of exceptional distinction.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Margaret Gutierrez (Migrant Education) has been awarded a $10,875 grant by the East Bloomfield Central Schools for her project, titled "Esperanza at SUNY New Paltz." This project will allow New Paltz to coordinate and deliver services to children of migrant farmworkers who are identified as homeless under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act guidelines.

Presentations & Exhibitions

Rimer Cardillo's installation "Cup and Birds of Clay Oil and Ashes" is on display at Proyecto'ace, an international art center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The show deals with the concept of the Northern and Southern habitats of the Americas.

Jack Wade (Theatre Arts) is the director and lighting designer for "The Woman in Black," Stephen Mallitratt's ghost play opening at the Shadowland Theatre, Ellenville, Sept. 9 - Sept. 25.

Rob Miraldi (Communication and Media) will speak on "Reporters' Sources and Jail" at 5 p.m., Sept. 19, in College Hall, Room CH-H111.

Karen Rich, Sociology Department, speaking on "Police Interviews of Sexual Assault Victims: Relationships between Attitudes, Knowledge and Techniques," Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. in College Hall, Room CH-H111.

Anne Galperin (Art Department) presented a paper at Revolution: Philadelphia, the American Institute of Graphic Arts National Education Conference 2005, held in Boston during June 3-4, titled "Making Change: Slowly, But With Precedent." In conjunction with the art exhibition, "Recycled Revisited: Artistic Responses to the Earth Charter," on display in the West Wing Galleries of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, there will be a lecture and workshop from noon to 6 p.m., Sept. 18, presented by John Dahlsen in Lecture Center 104. The gallery talk by John Dahlsen and Shelley Parriott begins at 2 p.m. The 3 p.m. workshop, led by Parriott, is in the Smiley Art Building, Rooms 206/208. Call the Art Education Program secretary, Laurie Rios, at x3850, or x3832 to register. Fee for lunch and workshop: students $5; public $15.

Students in the News

Laura Murawski (Biology) and Nathan Hudson (Biology) participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates Program during the summer. Murawski was offered four positions. She chose one at the Institute of Ecosystems Study in Millbrook, where she studied "Calcium Concentrations in Soil and Soil Invertebrates Along an Urban to Rural Gradient." Hudson studied "Positional Dependence of Helical Propensity for Aromatic vs. Hydrophobic Amino Acids" at SUNY Buffalo.

In the Aug. 15 of News Pulse, we incorrectly spelled the last name of Angelo Parra on the Bulletin Board page. In the Aug. 29 issue, we incorrectly spelled the name of Ziva Bar-Chaim, Psy.D in the Psychological Counseling Center profile story.
