
Awards, Honors, Appointments and RecognitionPeter D.G. Brown (Foreign Languages) was elected vice president for academics of the New Paltz chapter of United University Professions. Brown, a Distinguished Service Professor of German, will serve a two-year term, which began on June 16. Tom Meyer and Mary Sawyer (Secondary Education) have been awarded a $4,000 grant by the National Writing Project for their project, "Strengthening and Documenting Successful Curriculum and Instruction in a Summer Writing Program for Migrant/ELL Youth." This proposed minigrant supports the summer Youth Writing Project, which is a collaboration between the Hudson Valley Writing Project and the Migrant Education Outreach Program. They have also been awarded a $4,000 grant by the National Writing Project for their project, "Building Knowledge, Leadership, Community and Advocacy for ELLs - TIC." The proposed minigrant supports a team of Hudson Valley Writing Project teacher consultants to study the intersection of migrant youth, English language learners and writing instruction. Finally, they were awarded a $43,000 grant by the National Writing Project for their project, "Hudson Valley Writing Project 2005-06." This project serves K-16 teachers in Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties and focuses on improving student writing. Presentations & ExhibitionsGil Brenner (Geological Sciences, Emeritus) has a summer exhibition of 14 works of art and photography on display at the Rhinebeck Savings Bank starting July 1. Thomas Sarrantonio presented a lecture titled "Painting and the Politics of Perception" at the Woodstock Artists Association on May 16. PublicationsHoward Good (Communication & Media) has an essay, "You Know You've Been on the School Board Too Long When...," in the July 2005 issue of American School Board Journal. Other Interesting EndeavorsGil Brenner (Geological Sciences, Emeritus) was featured in "Artist of the Week" in a two-page interview in the June 23 issue "Pulse," an art and events magazine of the Mid-Hudson Valley Region. The article also contains three images of Brenner's art and craft. Ken Gillman (Special Programs) has been awarded a $393,080 grant by the U.S. Department of Education for his project, titled "Student Support Services Program." This program provides academic assistance to students to facilitate their ability to stay in college until they earn their baccalaureate degree. Participants include disabled and non-disabled students who receive counseling, tutoring and instruction services. Athletic AccoladesFor the second straight year, SUNY New Paltz junior baseball outfielder Jeff Cote' (Mechanicsville, Md.) has earned the SUNYAC Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award. This award is given to a student- athlete in each SUNYAC sponsored sport who was a member of the allconference team and earned the highest grade-point average. Cote', a First Team All- SUNYAC selection, hit .333 and led the Hawks with 14 doubles. He also tied for the team lead in runs batted in (25) and finished second in runs scored (26). In the classroom, Cote' is a computer engineering major. Cote' was the third SUNY New Paltz student-athlete to be recognized by the chancellor this year. In the spring, Kelly Long (women's volleyball) and Liz Delia (women's swimming) were recognized as Chancellor's Award recipients as well. In addition, 43 student-athletes were named to the SUNYAC spring all-academic team. To qualify, a studentathlete must be a varsity athlete, have completed the entire season and have maintained a grade-point average of 3.3 for the spring semester. Sixteen of the 43 were also named to the conference commissioner's list. A minimum grade point average of 3.3 for three semesters is required to earn that honor. |
