Honors Program creates environment for students to become well-rounded leadersStory and photo by Sharon Feder '06 The Honors Program, with 150 participants, dedicates itself to training its students to be wellrounded, persuasive and articulate leaders.
The Honors Program, located in College Hall, is coordinated by its director, Jeff Miller, with the assistance of Kay Patrick- Alameen. Miller is also the chair of the Honors Program Advisory Council. Applicants to the program are required to have a 3.5 GPA and, once they are members, they must maintain that average. In addition, honors students must complete three requirements. They are required to nary seminars. These seminars are capped take a minimum of four intensive, cross-diciplinary seminars. These are capped at 15 students and are student-led, while professors moderate them. The seminars fulfill General Education requirements and prepare students for an intensive thesis project. "For the second requirement, we're looking for a capstone achievement," said Miller, who explained that the senior year thesis is similar to that of a graduate thesis. Thesis students usua l ally work with one to two professors and present their work at the end of the year. A third requirement for honors students is community service. They are expected to participate in an unpaid altruistic activity. "Community is important," said Miller. "I think it's important for students to engage in their communities." The program recommends groups that students can volunteer with and directs them to related Web resources that might interest them. In addition to coordinating and teaching courses, Miller coordinates a lecture series for the Honors Program. The purpose of the series is to allow students to view faculty addressing their colleagues. "We want a forum for conversation between disciplines," said Miller. Though the Honors Program runs the lectures, they are open to the public. In addition, the Honors Center is open to all SUNY New Paltz students from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., after which its access is limited to honors students.
