
Awards, Honors, Appointments and RecognitionSusan Ingalls Lewis (History) has been awarded an Anna K. and Mary E. Cunningham Research Residency for 2005 from the New York State Library. Dr. Lewis will continue her research on businesswomen in 19th-century Albany using the library's extensive collections. Elizabeth Carroll-Clarke (EOP) was a guest speaker at the Annual Thurgood Marshall Breakfast for the Ellenville NAACP on May 21. The event was titled "Celebrating Brown v. Board of Education: 50 Years and Beyond Promises and Progress." Presentations & ExhibitionsWilliam Rhoads (Art History, Emeritus) presented a paper, "Architecture for the Automobilist in Ulster County, 1900-1950," at the Conference on New York State History held at Syracuse University on June 10. Glenn Geher (Psychology), New Paltz alumni, Heather Downey '03 (Psychology) and Kristin L. Renstrom '04 (Psychology), current student Juan Romero (Psychology) and three alumni of Western Oregon University have published an article in the 2005 edition of the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, titled "Motivational Underpinnings of Romantic Partner Perceptions: Psychological and Physiological Evidence" (volume 22, pp. 255-281; Sage Publications). PublicationsSusan Ingalls Lewis (History) published the article, "Business or Labor? Blurred Boundaries in the Careers of Self-Employed Needlewomen in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Albany," in a collection of essays on Victorian needlewomen: Famine and Fashion, Needlewomen in the Nineteenth Century, from Ashgate Publishing Ltd (2005). This volume assembles the work of American, British and Canadian scholars from the fields of art history, literary criticism, gender studies, labor history, business history, and economic history to draw together a variety of disciplines and methologies. Alice Andrews's (Psychology) book review of Colin Talbot's "The Paradoxical Primate" was published in Metapsychology Online (www.metapsychology.net) June 13. Ellen Konowitz (Art History) published an article, "A Rare Subject in a Drawing from the Circle of Pieter Coecke van Aelst," in the spring issue of the journal Master Drawings. Students in the NewsThe following students were award recipients of the 2004- 2005 Asian Studies Program Book Award: Paul Kibe (Excellence in Intermediate Japanese); Cassandra Savino (Excellence in Intermediate Japanese); Alice Koziol (Excellence in Japanese Fiction); and Terence McCoy (Excellence in History of Modern China). These awards formally recognize and reward excellent academic achievement among students in Asian Studies courses. Each recipient of this award receives a certificate and has the opportunity to select a book from the Awards collection. The student chapter of the Society for Resource Management (SHRM), Management Association (MA), was recently awarded the 2004-2005 Superior Merit Award. This national award recognizes achievement in the four broad areas of professional chapter operations, professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and partnership with SHRM. Winning a Merit Award places New Paltz in the top 23 percent of all student chapters nationwide and was awarded to only 16 chapters in the Northeast region. |
