Summer Repertory Theatre offering two plays this July

Beginning in July, the New Paltz Summer Repertory Theatre will feature two productions with performances by professional actors at Parker Theatre.

The first, the commercially and critically successful "Art," Yasmina Reza's insightful comedy is as much an examination of friendship as it is of modern art, and "Mary Me a Little," a musical revue that uses several unknown songs by Stephen Sondheim to tell a charming and bittersweet tale of love, loneliness and survival as a modern single.

French playwright Reza garnered international acclaim with her play "Art" (1994), for which she received the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for best comedy and the 1998 Antoionette Perry (Tony) Award for best play.

"Art" concerns the cataclysmic effect on three friends, Serge, Marc and Yvan, when Serge purchases an expensive work of abstract art -- a large painting consisting of white lines on a white canvas. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.

"Marry Me a Little" uses several songs by the undisputed master of the contemporary Broadway musical to tell a charming and bittersweet tale about two single strangers left alone in their studio apratments on a Saturday night. They pass their time with sweetly secret, unshared fantasies, never knowing that they're just a floor away from each other and the end of their lonely dreams.

"Art" begins July 1 and runs through July 10. "Marry Me a Little" begins July 14 and runs through July 24. Tickets are $22 general reserved and $17 reserved senior/student. Call the box office (open 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday) at 257-3880 or visit the Web site at to order tickets and for showtimes.
