
Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition
Andy Evans (History) has been selected from among the full-time faculty as the 2004-2005 recipient of the Liberal Arts & Sciences Teacher of the Year Award. In addition to monetary recognition, Evans' name will be engraved and his picture displayed on a plaque to be hung in the lobby of the Jacobson Faculty Tower. At the request of Dean Gerald Benjamin, the teacher of the year recipient meets and talks with new faculty about issues in teaching. Evans received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in modern German history at Indiana University. His research focuses on the history of scientific racism in Germany. Evans' classes combine political history with a social and cultural approach designed to highlight the experiences of everyday people. Congratulations, Andy! SUNY New Paltz was awarded a special recognition award at the 10th Annual 2005 Averell Harriman International Trade Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 3, in New Windsor. The SUNY delegation included: Dr. Hadi Salavitabar (Business) who nominated SUNY New Paltz's Center for International Programs for the award; Bruce Sillner (International Programs); Beth Vargas (International Student Programs); Linda Brady (Haggerty English Language Program); and Mario Varuzza (Institute for International Business). The Averell Harriman International Trade Awards were founded in 1996 to recognize companies and individuals who have excelled in international trade in the Hudson Valley. Tonda Highley (Career Development) has been awarded a $4,000 grant by the NYS Office for Children and Family Services for her project, titled "SUNY New Paltz - Americorps Education Awards Program." This project provides tutoring, mentoring and youth enrichment activities to culturally diverse local youth through placement of 50 Americorps members. Having this program on campus makes student participants eligible for Americorps scholarship assistance, which is equivalent to $1,000 per student per year. The College Reading and Learning Association recently granted its Level 1 Certification to the Tutoring Center/Writing Center at SUNY New Paltz, under the direction of Sarah Gardner and Mark Bellomo. As a member of the International Tutor Certification Program, the Tutoring Center is now empowered to issue CRLA Certification to peer tutors who meet the rigorous training requirements set out by the association. Yolanda Howell, David Farbaniec and Walter Wontz (Purchasing) recently attended the SUNY Purchasing Association Spring Conference. Sessions were presented by the Office of the State Comptroller, Office of General Services, NYS Industries for the Disabled and SUNY System addressing recent initiatives issued by the Governor's Office and the State Comptroller's Office. Presentations & ExhibitionsBarbara Petruzzelli (Assistant Director of Sojourner Truth Library) and Ted Clark (School of Business) participated as members of an expert marketing research panel at the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Business Marketing Association (BMA) meeting on May 31. The panel consisted of Renee Crystal, a marketing consultant, Petruzzelli and Clark. Petruzzelli discussed many of the resources available to businesses on the Internet and through the college's library and the Mid Hudson Library system. Clark discussed the latest software available for marketing research data analysis and Crystal provided an overview of the field of business-to-business marketing research. More than 40 members attended the meeting.
