Gerald Sorin (History) is the author of "Irving Howe and Jewish Secularism," an article that appeared in the May-June issue of Jewish Currents. He has also published a major review essay on Cynthia Ozick's newest novel "Heir to the Glimmering World" in Congress Monthly (May-June) and a review-retrospective for The Jewish Reader (June, National Yiddish Book Center) on Saul Bellow featuring Mr. Sammler's Planet and other major works as a recognition and celebration of the novelist who died this year.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Gilbert J. Brenner (Geology, Emeritus) was awarded the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding volunteer accomplishments on April 26 at The University of California at Irvine. Dr. Brenner has achieved this award after teaching four courses for OLLI on subjects ranging from the evolution of life to plate tectonics. The award was presented at the UCI Alumni Club.

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) held the third annual induction ceremony for The Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society honoring 52 students on April 22. Chi Alpha Epsilon's purpose is to recognize the academic achievements of students admitted to colleges and universities through opportunity programs.

Yu Jen Fan (Graduate Student, Electrical and Computer Engineering) won second place at the Scintilla 2005 Design Competition held at Marist College on May 6. Fan's project "A Neural Network Chip," supervised by Dr. Yaser Khalifa (Electrical and Computer Engineering), was one of 14 projects presented by 29 students from the U. S. Military Academy, New Paltz, Bard, Vassar, and Marist Colleges, in addition to Dutchess and Ulster community colleges.

The New Paltz Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association recently received three major awards at the 27th American Marketing Association's Annual International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans from April 14 -17. Representing the SUNY New Paltz chapter were faculty advisor Professor Ted Clark of the School of Business; AMA President Peter Esposito; Executive Vice President Victoria West; Vice President of Communications Joyce Diener; Vice President of Membership Gina Marotta; and Co- VPs of Marketing Research Tatyana Varshavsky and Jenna Waite. The chapter received the following awards: Best Marketing Plan, which was given for excellence in writing a strategic plan, analyzing chapter strengths and weaknesses, setting goals and developing activities to meet those goals; Outstanding Community Service Programs, in part, from the unique market research projects conducted pro bono by the chapter for various charities; and Outstanding Marketing Week Award for providing five programs within five days during marketing week.
