Presentations & Exhibitions

William Rhoads (Emeritus, Art History) lectured on "The Architecture of the Hudson Valley Country House," at a symposium on Hudson Valley Country Houses, presented by the Great Estates Consortium and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, held in Hyde Park on April 16.

Pam Atkins (Director of Psychological Counciling Center) and Jesse Valiante-Colvin (Complex Director, Scudder Hall) delivered a presentation, titled "The Tie That Binds: Dealing with Tough Times through Residence Life and Counseling Center Ties" to the Northeastern Counseling Center Director's Conference, March 7. Atkins co-hosted the conference, which brought in 47 college and university counseling center directors. The presentation focused on New Paltz's Residence Life/Counseling Center liaison, an effective piece of the college's crisis intervention program.

Lourdes Giordani (Anthropology) chaired the panel "Shamanism, Breath, and Reverie: Several Embodied Technologies of Consciousness," and presented the paper "Biodynamic Farming, Animism, and Ecological Practice Today," at the 25th annual meeting of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness, University of Massachusetts-Amherst (April 16). Her commentary on the paper "Signaling Theory, Strategic Interaction, and Symbolic Capital," by R. Bliege Bird and E. Alden Smith has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Current Anthropology, April 2005, Vol. 46, No. 2.

Narcyz Roztocki (Business) participated in a plenary panel, titled "Grand Challenges in Information Systems Research," at the 2005 ISOneWorld Conference, Las Vegas, Nev., March 30 - April 1.

Rimer Cardillo (Art) is exhibiting his work, "Wood Box I," a mixed media on paper at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C., as part of the show "Art of the Print" until the end of May.

Publications

Mohammad R. Zunoubi (Electrical and Computer Engineering) co-published a paper, titled "A Combined Bi-CGSTAB (l) and Wavelet Transform Method for EM Problems Using Method of Moments," in Progress in Electromagnetics Research, PIER 52, pp. 205-224, in March.

Students in the News

This April, three undergraduate School of Business students, John Fragale, Danielle Glendenning and Jeff Katz, represented the SHRM Management Association at the HR Games competition at the University of Buffalo. The team, coached by MBA student Nicole Giordano, earned the third-highest overall point total among the 14 schools competing.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

The SUNY New Paltz Web site (www.newpaltz.edu) was awarded "Best in Category" for the annual awards for excellence competition sponsored by the SUNY Council of University Affairs and Development (SUNY/CUAD). The "Faces of New Paltz" project (www.newpaltz.edu/faces), which is the central feature of the college's home page, was awarded a judge's citation for the student recruitment Web site sub-category. A judge's citation was also awarded for the "Making an Impact" economic impact study (www.newpaltz.edu/makinganimpact) in the media relations programs category. Awards will be presented at the SUNY/CUAD Educational Conference in Cooperstown June 17.

The Engineering Department hosted the New Paltz High School Digital Electronics class on April 26, where Michael Otis introduced the high school students to a college-level engineering laboratory. The students designed and built a logic circuit using industry standard software tools and development systems. The digital electronics class at the high school is part of a sequence of engineering courses offered as part the national Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program.

The federally-funded Student Support Services Project, which is lead by project director Ken Gillman and operates the Center for Academic Development and Learning (CADL), has been awarded funding for the next four years (2005-2009) at a level of $393,080 for the first year and will total more than $1.5 million through the four-year funding cycle. This U.S. Department of Education grant award has provided the institution 38 years of continuous funding.

Terry Murray (Humanistic/Multicultural Education Program) who will graduate this month from the Univeristy at Albany with a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, has received the Presidential Distinguished Dissertation Award for his dissertation "Exploring the Psychological Terrain in the Virtual Classroom: The Nature of Relationship and Power in Online Teaching and Learning."

Other Interesting Endeavors

Tony Bonilla (EOP) was on the winning team for the National Wally Ball Championship held over the weekend of March 4-6, at the Classic Athletic Club in Fairfield, NJ. Nearly 100 men and women from across the country competed in doubles and mixed competitions.
