Institutional Research involved campuswideThis is the fifth in a series of department profiles that will be featured in News Pulse throughout the year.
The members of the Office of Institutional Research (left to right) are Shuang Liu, assistant director; Kelli Parmley, director; Kirsten Rowe, graduate assistant; and Mary Ann Landolina, secretary. By Sharon Feder '06 In a small office on the sixth floor of the Haggerty Administration Building, Institutional Research (IR) is taking steps to make itself more visible within the campus community. According to Kelli Parmley, assistant vice president of Institutional Research, her office is responsible for collecting, analyzing and reporting data about SUNY New Paltz to external organizations and providing information to campus decision makers. "There's no part of campus we're not involved in," she said. The IR team, which is composed of Parmley; Shuang Liu, assistant director; Mary Ann Landolina, secretary; and Kirsten Rowe, graduate assistant, provides information and analysis services to support planning, decision-making, and assessment at a variety of organizational levels. They collect data on faculty and staff, students, course information, graduation, and degrees awarded through surveys and existing data sources. Using my.newpaltz.edu, the office has been able to implement a graduating senior survey. The office completes about 40 external mandated reports, about 10 guidebooktype surveys, and many additional internal requests for information every year. Compiling information is just a part of their job; analyzing the information and understanding it is just as important. The information collected is used within the college to detect trends and enable decisions to be made based on data. "It allows us to find the school's strengths and weaknesses," said Parmley. Parmley said that some of their future goals include: integrating IR's professional knowledge, skills and available information appropriately into the institutional strategic planning processes; increasing collaborative activities with regional higher education institutions (specifically articulated community colleges); to increase System-wide visibility of New Paltz IR through quality participation in System level decision-making and professional development opportunities; and to continue to collaborate with computer services to identify information needs of various campus constituents. Institutional Research is also very involved in assessment. The office provides leadership for implementing assessment in administrative areas and provides support to the Provost's Office to implement general education assessment and assessment in the major. In addition, Institutional Research works with departments on campus to assist them in gathering data for accreditation and program review. "Assessment has been an important role for us and made us extremely visible," said Parmley. For more information about the IR team, call x3227 or visit www.newpaltz.edu/oir. |
