Presentations & Exhibitions

John VanderLippe (History) co-organized a thematic session, with Magnus Bernhardsson (Williams College), titled "Martinis, Marxists and Mullahs: Were the 1950s a 'Golden Age' in the Middle East?," for the Middle East Studies Association Meeting in San Francisco, Nov. 19-22. VanderLippe also presented an invited talk, "The Effect of Turkish-U.S. Relations on Turkey's Position in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and the EU," at a forum on "European Turkey: Modernization, Secularism and Islam," at Cornell University, Dec. 3-4.

Mary Fakler, Rachel Rigolino and Larry Carr (English) presented a panel session, titled "Reflections in the Monitor: Writing and Thinking Online," at the Conference On Instructional Technology and Enhancing Teaching and Learning In and Across the Disciplines on Oct. 22 in the New Paltz Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). The event was organized by Richard Kelder (director, TLC) and was sponsored by the SUNY FACT Committee.

Publications

Baback Izadi (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Sreekanth K. Bhaskaran (graduate student), and Lisa Spainhower (IBM) presented and published a paper, titled "Coordinating Human Operators and Computer Agents for Recovery-Oriented Computing," in the proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration (IEEE IRI- 2004), pp. 351 - 356, Nov. 2004. Izadi also chaired two sessions at the same conference.

Narcyz Roztocki (Business) and Heinz Roland Weistoffer (Virginia Commonwealth University) published a paper, titled "Evaluating Information Technology Investments in Emerging Economies Using Activity-Based Costing," in the Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries, Vol. 19.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Arnaldo Mejias (EOP) has accepted an advisor's position at the University of South Florida's Honors Program and has relocated to Florida with his family. Good luck, Arnaldo!

Rendesia Scott (formerly EOP) will join New Paltz's School of Business as a senior academic advisor, after serving as an EOP advisor for 7 years.

Pamela St. John (Chemistry) has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Foundation to fund her research on the dynamics of DNA hybridization.

Ted Clark (School of Business) assisted at the Business-to- Business and the Business-to-Consumer trade show for the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 22 at Ulster County Community College. Clark and 21 students, most of whom were members of the collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association, helped to set up booths, surveyed both attendees and exhibitors, and manned booth spaces while exhibitors went to lunch. Students earned academic credit for participating in the trade show. In addition, three students were selected to judge the booths in a variety of categories

Tonda Highley (Career Development) has been awarded a $4,000 grant by the NYS Office for Children and Family Services for her project, titled "SUNY New Paltz - Americorps Education Awards Program." This project provides tutoring, mentoring and youth enrichment activities to culturally diverse local youth through placement of 50 Americorps members. Having this program on campus makes student participants eligible for Americorps scholarship assistance, which is equivalent to $1,000 per student per year.

Ed Carroll ('85) has been named president of entertainment service for Rainbow Media Holdings, where he will oversee AMC, the Independent Film Channel and WE: Women's Entertainment.

Peter Manning (Geography, '90 and M.L.A., '95 Cornell University) presented a research paper, "Is Rip Van Winkle Asleep or Awake? Finding Our Place in the 21st Century Landscape," at the annual meeting of the Middle States Division of the Association of American Geographers at Villanova University on Oct. 30. The paper celebrates the landscape of the Catskill region on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Catskill Park, and discusses the traditional narrative of Rip Van Winkle's story in the context of contemporary development.
