What's NewCollege’s main Web site gets new year makeoverThere will be a brand new design for the college’s main Web site www.newpaltz.edu in January. The design uses our current college colors and logo type, highlights our outstanding faculty, students and alumni, and gives an impression about the landscape that surrounds New Paltz. The Web office, in an effort to update and improve the site and to comply with the new, New York State Web Accessibility Standards passed this June, has been planning and designing the site for several months. Much thought and extensive analysis of research has gone into the new design. Decisions were based on survey results from this summer, which included responses from six of the college’s primary audiences: alumni; media; friends of the college; prospective students; current students; and faculty/staff. The Public Affairs staff has gathered feedback through e-mail, the online feedback form and conversations with our various target audiences. Each month, the Web Coordinator analyzes usage reports, which indicate what sites received the most traffic, and what paths people take through the site. In addition, the software that drives our search engine provides reports that track what terms people are searching for. Netscape 4 Users: It's Time to UpgradeIf you are still using Netscape 4, you will not see the new home page design in January. Netscape 4 is more than seven years old and does not support the new Web Standards. Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla Firefox, Opera 7+, Safari and Netscape 7 will all render the site properly. If you need to upgrade, please contact the Administrative Help Desk in Computer Services at x3449. Anyone interested in more information about why the college is moving to Web Standards can read the article “Why Don’t You Code for Netscape?,” available online at www.alistapart.com/articles/netscape.
