Presentations & Exhibitions

Shafiul Choudry (Geological Sciences) gave a lecture at the 116th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. The convention was held on Nov. 7-10 at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver. About 6,200 geoscientists attended. The lecture provided students with an understanding of the interaction of flow systems and computer models in real world situations.

Ernelle Fife (English) presented a paper, "‘Nefarious Creature': Translating Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility to the Narrative of Film," as part of the Adaptation Seminar at the 10th Annual Conference of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics in New Orleans, Nov. 13.

Peter Kaufman (Sociology) presented a paper, "Biting the Hand That Feeds You: Athletes Against Sweatshop Labor," at the annual meeting of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) on Nov. 4-7 in Tucson, Ariz.

Publications

Glenn Geher (Psychology) recently published three book chapters and one edited book on the topic of emotional intelligence. He and Kristin Renstrom ('04) co-wrote "Measuring the Emotion-Perception Component of Emotional Intelligence" published this year in S.P. Shohov (Ed.), "Advances in Psychology Research." (Nova Science Publishing). Also, his edited book, "Measuring Emotional Intelligence: Common Ground and Controversy" (also published by Nova), came out this year. He also co-wrote two chapters in that book, including one titled "Measurement Issues in Emotional Intelligence Research," written with Renstrom, and one titled "The Measurement of Emotional Intelligence in Children: The Case of Reactive Attachment Disorder," written with Sara Kay Elizabeth Hall (who graduated from Southern Oregon University in 2001) and Marc A. Brackett, a research professor in the Psychology Department at Yale University.

Narcyz Roztocki (Business), Sally Schultz (Business) and Joan Hollister (Marist College) published an article, "An International Comparison of the Use of Cost Management and Financial Tools," in the Journal of Accounting and Finance Research, Vol. 12, No. 5.

Corrections

In the Nov. 8 issue of News Pulse, it was incorrectly reported that SEI packets may be picked up for Education in the Old Main mail room 107. The correct room number is Old Main room 106.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Seven Asian Studies program faculty (current and retired) joined with two SUNY New Paltz alumni to play prominent roles in the annual New York Conference on Asian Studies held this year at Bard College on Oct. 29-30. Jonathan (Yoni) Schwartz chaired the panel "Searching for Solutions to Policy Challenges in Asia," in which he also presented a paper "Society and the State: the Impact of Exogenous Shocks." In the same panel, Sarah Greenberg ('04) presented a paper "China's Health Institutions - Towards a Greater Understanding of Policy Response." Dylan McGee ('01), now in the Ph.D. program in Japanese Literature at Princeton University, organized the panel "Edofying Reading: Edo Japanese Rereadings of Chinese Fiction and Modern Japanese Rereading of Edo," in which he presented a paper "Mongrelizing Legend of the Marshlands: The Trope of Lineage in Kyokutei Bakin's Legend of the Eight Satomi Dogs of Southern Fusa." On the same panel, Chris Robins (Foreign Languages), presented a paper "The Omote-Ura of Words: Inoue Hisashi's Revival of the Gesaku Spirit," and also served as chair of the panel "Gender and Body in Modern Japanese Literature." Elizabeth Brotherton (Art History) served as discussant on the panel "Chinese Contemporary Art" that was held in connection with a Bard art exhibition. Insu Fenkl (English) chaired the panel "Translation and Literary Writing in Korea and Japan." Ping Jin (Music) and Xiaohua Sun from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented a multimedia work for computer graphics and music, titled "Crossing of Changes," which was inspired by the symbolic and synchronistic thinking in the IChing. Ron Knapp (Geography, Emeritus) presented a paper "Designing with Nature: Siting and Situating a Huizhou House" in the panel "China's Cultural Landscapes in the New Millennium: Tradition and Transformation." Marleigh Grayer Ryan (Foreign Languages-Japanese Emeritus and Former LA&S Dean) was honored for the fourth time at a NYCAS conference with the awarding of The Marleigh Grayer Ryan Student Prize for the best Asian Studies papers written by both a graduate student and an undergraduate student in New York state. Kristine Harris (History) was unable to present at NYCAS '04, since she was participating in an intensive 12-day seminar in Korea during October as a recipient of a Korea Society Fall Fellowship. At the conclusion of the seminar, she traveled to Nanjing and Shanghai, China, for further research. After earning her MA degree from Harvard University this past spring, Erynn Sarno ('98) is now teaching "Women of China" for the Department of History while Professor Harris is on sabbatical leave.
