Author to encourage social commitment

Paul Rogat Loeb, author of "Soul of a Citizen" and "Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus," will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Lecture Center 100.

Loeb will discuss how ordinary citizens - students in particular - can make their voices heard and actions count in a time they are told that neither matter.

He will explore the struggles of students to find their voice in a challenging world and look at how ordinary citizens of all ages learn to take committed stands. He will also describe how people become involved in larger community issues and what stops them from getting involved; how they burn out in exhaustion or maintain commitment for the long haul; and how involvement can give a rare sense of connection and purpose.

Loeb has spent more than 30 years researching and writing about citizen responsibility and empowerment - asking what makes some people choose lives of social commitment, while others abstain. He has lectured at 300 colleges and universities around the country and done more than 1,000 TV and radio interviews.

The event is sponsored by the Provost's Office and the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
