Yaser M. A. Khalifa (Electrical and Computer Engineering) gave two seminars on “Evolutionary Music Composition at SUNY New Paltz: Status and Potential.” The seminars were presented at Goldsmiths University of London (London, UK) and at the University of Sussex (Brighton, UK) on July 20 and 28.

Author/activist, Paul Rogat Loeb will speak at New Paltz at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Lecture Center 100. Loeb’s critically acclaimed books, “Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time”; “Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus”; “Nuclear Culture”; and “Hope in Hard Times,” explore the struggle of current students to find their voices in a challenging world. Loeb will also conduct a faculty workshop from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Teaching and Learning Center, College Hall, H111. Alumni in the News

Elizabeth Hayter (’00, MPS:Humanistic/Multicultural Education), assistant director of education at Ulster BOCES, has been selected by the YWCA of Ulster County as one of the 12 Tribute to Women 2004 honorees. The program recognizes outstanding Ulster County women who have shown leadership and service in the areas of education, health care and the arts.

Edward J. Renehan Jr. (’80, Political Science) gave a talk, titled “John Burroughs: Literary Naturalist of the Catskills & Hudson Valley,” on Oct. 16. Renehan is the author of “John Burroughs: An American Naturalist” (Black Dome Press, 1992).

Mark Davenport (’92, Music) has been named director of the music program at Regis University, Denver, CO. He has performed as recorder soloist with both the Colorado Music Festival and the Boulder Bach Festival orchestras. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Recorder Society.

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Lourdes Giordani (Anthropology) has been elected to Active Group Membership in the Society of Woman Geographers. The society brings together women whose work has involved extensive travel in the investigations of little-known or unique places, peoples or things in the world.

Rob Bruley (Athletics) was named the 2004 Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year for the SUNY Athletic Conference for the second time in the last three years. In addition to directing the Hawks to a third consecutive top-two finish at the SUNYAC championship, his squad went 7-2 this fall.

Publications

Howard Good (Communication & Media) has an essay, “Honor Role,” in the October 2004 issue of Teacher Magazine that argues that schools need to nurture moral courage in students.

Students in the News

Owen Harvey (MFA, Painting) is included in the exhibition “White Matter(s)” at NUTUREart Gallery and Emerging Curators’ Resource Center, Brooklyn, through Oct. 10.

Bum-Joo Jeon (MFA, Sculpture) has been selected for an Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center. This award was initiated in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and encourage their continued commitment to the field of sculpture, as well as to recognize the award winner’s faculty sponsors, Steven Bradford and Emily Puthoff. Bum-Joo is one of 22 students selected from a pool of more than 300 nominees and 1,100 images submitted. His work is included in an exhibition at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J. which is on view from Oct. 9-May 1. His work is also currently featured in Sculpture Magazine’s October issue.

Athletics Accolades

Twenty-eight student-athletes at New Paltz were recently named to the Athletic Department’s Spring 2004 All-Academic Team.The honor goes to all student-athletes who receive a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and have made a significant contribution to his or her team. Student-athletes from the following teams were honored: Baseball: Jeff Cote’, Pete Esposito, Jesus Estaba, Josh Gutes, Jeff Sosis and Eric Velasquez; Men’s Basketball: John Hauser and Matt Irwin; Women’s Basketball: Lindsay Dakin and Tarah Norris; Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field: Kyle Kerelchuk and Colin Mills; Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field: Heather DeBuono, Kelly Moore, Janet Walsh, Alex Wojcik, Musu Jackson-Buckner, Kate Choromanski and Marissa Ouranitsas; Field Hockey: Kelly Anderson and Allison Taub; Men’s Soccer: Garrett Munro and Michael Dodge; Women’s Soccer: Alison Fliegel, Karalyn Kudlak, Danielle Herring and Meredith Ventimiglia. Congratulations to all!
