
Awards, Honors, Appointments and RecognitionEve Waltermaurer (Sociology) has been awarded a $19,770 grant by the University at Albany/CDC for her project, titled "Screening & Intervention Study of Health Outcomes & IPV in a Primary Care Setting." This longitudinal study will assess multiple interventions among women reporting intimate partner victimizations in a primary care setting. The portion sub-allocated to SUNY New Paltz will include assistance with data analysis and report writing for the study. Bruce Sillner (International Programs) has been awarded a $6,000 grant for his project, titled "Academic Monitoring of Bi- National Programs." This project provides support for a graduate assistant in the MBA program who will assist with academic monitoring of the bi-national business program. Lourdes Giordani (Anthropology) has been elected to Active Group Membership in the Society of Woman Geographers. The society brings together women "explorers at heart" whose work has involved extensive travel in the investigations of littleknown or unique places, peoples or things in the world. Presentations & ExhibitionsJack Wade (Theatre Arts) was the lighting designer for Howard Zinn's, "Emma" at the Byrdcliffe Theatre in Woodstock (Sept. 18- Oct. 3). The drama deals with the life of American anarchist, Emma Goldman. Sarah Bissonnette-Adler (Senior, Theatre Design) was the assistant lighting designer. Ron Knapp (Geography Emeritus) presented an invited paper "Composing Space: Patterns of Vernacular Buildings in China" at the East Asia: Experiments in Architecture and Urbanism Symposium on Sept. 25, which was organized by the College of Design and the Asian Center at the University of Kentucky. The 17th annual H. P. Lovecraft Forum will be held at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 21, in the Jacobsen Faculty Tower, room 1010 .PublicationsYaser M.A. Khalifa (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Ehi Okoene ('02) published and presented the paper "An Autonomous Agent-Based Surveillance System" at the 2004 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference held in Seattle, Washington, in June 2004. James R. Smith (Communication and Media) has recently published "ICW Funds Shoaling" and "The MSU PFD Study Report" in The Foghorn, a publication of the Mid-Hudson Power Squadron. Another article by Smith appearing in The Ensign, the national boating safety publication of the United States Power Squadrons, is titled "Stick with this Slippery Surface Fix." Smith has authored a number of recent articles on boating safety and communication technology. Mohammad Zunoubi (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Dr. Ahmed Kishk (The University of Mississippi), collaborated on an article, titled "Efficient Analysis of Large Method of Moments Matrices" that was presented and published in Proc. IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium, p.p. 639-642, June 2004. In addition, Zunoubi and Hassan Kalhor's (Electrical and Computer Engineering) article, titled "Optimization of Performance of Top-Hat Monopole Antennas by Adding Material Loading" was presented and published in Proc. IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium and USNC / URSI National Radio Science Meeting, page 260, June 2004. Gil Brenner (Geology Emeritus) published the feature article "Amber--Teardrops of Ancient Sunlight" in the September issue of the internation magazine, The Wire Artist. The article deals with the natural history of amber and its mode of formation. Alumni in the NewsSean Brix (MFA Painting, '04) recently had work in the exhibition, "Projects '04," at the Carriage House Gallery at the Islip Art Museum, East Islip. Other Interesting Endeavors
Abigail Robin (English and Women's Studies) has just completed three weekends of sold-out performances of Howard Zinn's two-act play, "Emma" at the Byrdcliffe Theater in Woodstock (Sept. 18- Oct. 3). Acting as assistant producer, publicist and performer in the drama, she worked in conjunction with Apocalypse Productions and with members of SUNY New Paltz's Theater Department. Robin has lectured extensively on Emma Goldman, and also has composed performance pieces based on Goldman's life and works. Robin is also a frequent host of the "On Campus @ SUNY New Paltz" television show produced on campus by Instructional Media Services (IMS) and the Office of Public Affairs. |
