Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Corinne Nyquist (Sojourner Truth Library) received a doctorate in Information Science from the University at Albany on May 15, 2004. Her dissertation research about public information policy focused on access, privacy and management issues in three local and state government databases containing citizen information. In 1986, Nyquist was promoted to full librarian, and in 1990 she received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship.

K.C. Stevens (Telecommunications), co-founder of the annual SUNY New Paltz Scholarship Golf Tournament, won the New Paltz Golf Course Women's Club Championship. Lenore Schulte (Educational Studies) placed first in the Women's "A" Flight competition.

Alumni in the News

John Turturro ('79) won an Emmy this month for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on USA Network's drama, "Monk." Aida Turturro's ('84) show, "The Sopranos," won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

Kimberly Fraleigh ('92, MA Psychology) has been appointed as Senior Researcher to the Center for Talented Youth program at Johns Hopkins University.

Presentations & Exhibitions

Donna Flayhan (Communication and Media) presented her paper, "Cell Phone Technology and Sudden Death: Comfort or a New Form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?" at the International Workshop on Mobile Technologies and Health: Benefits and Risks, held at the University of Udine, Italy in June. Twenty scholars from 16 countries were invited to the workshop to discuss research in the field of mobile technologies and health.

Anne R. Roschelle (Chair, Sociology) gave a talk, titled "Struggling in the Land of Plenty: Poverty in the United States," at the Carl-Schurz-Haus/Deutsch Amerikanisches Institute e.v. in Freiburg, Germany, in June. She also presented a paper, titled "The Impact of Welfare Reform on Immigrant Women in the United States," at the Evangelische Fachhochschule (Protestant University of Applied Sciences), also in Freiburg, Germany.

Joan Barker (Art/Communication & Media) had a selection of her underwater photographs, "Watermarks," on display at Donskoj & Company, Kingston, through Sept. 24. Barker also has interpretive black and white landscape photography on display at Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, through Oct. 24.

Reva Wolf (Art History) gave a lecture this month at Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, titled "Why Do Goya's ‘Disasters of War' Always Seem Timely?". This invited lecture was programmed to coincide with the exhibition, also at Grinnell, "I Saw It: The Invented Reality of Goya's ‘Disasters of War,'" which was organized by students, and which was conceptually based on Wolf's 1990 essay about Goya's set of war prints.

The Earth Charter Sustainable Community Summit, a three-day event held between Oct. 6-9 on campus and in the Village, will focus on values, principles and aspirations based upon contemporary science, international law, and the insights of various philosophy and religions. The exhibit, "Seeds of Change" will be on display at the rotunda of the Fine Arts Building from Oct. 4-15. The opening reception is at 4 p.m. on Oct. 6. Also on Oct. 6, environmentalist and author Lester Brown will give a lecture at 7 p.m. in the Studley Theater. At 7 p.m. on Oct. 7, there will be a multicultural music, dance and poetry performance in the SUB.

Publications

Mohammad Zunoubi (Electrical and Computer Engineering) presented a paper, titled "Implementation of Bi-CGSTAB(L) for Fast and Efficient Analysis of Electromagnetic Problems," at the Progress In Electromagnetics Research (PIERS) Conference in Pisa, Italy, in March. The article was published in the Research and Progress In Electromagnetics Extended Paper Proceedings, and was co-authored with Dr. Ahmed A. Kishk (The University of Mississippi).

Reva Wolf (Art History) contributed the introduction, titled "Through the Looking-Glass," to the book "I'll Be Your Mirror: The Selected Andy Warhol Interviews," edited by poet Kenneth Goldsmith, with an afterword by author and CUNY Graduate Center professor Wayne Koestenbaum (New York: Carroll & Graf, 2004).

Four members of the Geography Department had their papers published in a recent volume of "The Middle States Geographer"; Linda Greenow and Jo Margaret Mano, "Hub of the World: U.S. Promotional Map Brochures in the Mid- Twentieth Century"; Larry McGlinn, "Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries: Comparing 19th Century Water-Borne Disease Policy to Contemporary Environmental Policy"; and Mika Roinila, "Finnish Commercial Fishermen on Lake Superior: The Rise and Fall of an Ethnic Fishery."
