Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

University Police hosted a "Firearm and Explosive Recognition Training Course" given by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agents for NYS Law Enforcement Personnel. The training, which took place on Aug. 11, included a variety of aspects relating to firearms and explosives and ATF's role in investigating violations of federal law. Local law enforcement agencies that participated included University Police, New Paltz Police, New York State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Ulster County Sheriff's Department.

The Department of Residence Life has announced the arrival of three new resident directors: Wadner Auguste of Deyo Hall, Lisa Tufariello of Crispell Hall, and Emily Spilman of Bevier Hall. All three directors have several years of experience in residence life and judicial affairs. Also, Aaron Hines of Bouton Hall was promoted to area coordinator of programming, Vidal Lopez was promoted to area coordinator of judicials, and Corrinn Schwabrow was promoted to area coordinator of advancement in the Department of Residence Life.

Three New Paltz undergraduate students were each awarded $7,000 Freeman Foundation Scholarships to study abroad in Japan during the 2004/05 academic year. The award recipients are: Philip Green, International Business/Engineering, Kansai Gaidai University, Osaka; Zachary Lundberg, Asian Studies, Kansai Gaidai University; and Tracie Saori Takatani, Computer Science/Asian Studies, Kanazawa University, Kanazawa.

Alumni in the News

Doug Genzer (B.A., Geography, '93) won two national awards for his "Denver Bike Map" at the ESRI International User Conference in San Diego (Aug. 9-13). The map won "Best Overall Map" and "Best Cartographic Design: Single Map Product, Large Format" in a competition with more than 1,000 maps from all over the nation. Genzer is currently a GIS Data Analyst at Denver GIS, a planning agency for the city of Denver. His supervisor, Dave Luhan, is also a SUNY New Paltz Geography alumnus (B.A. Geography, '88). Presentations & Exhibitions

Larry McGlinn (Geography) presented a paper "The Spatial Distribution of Wind Farms in the United States: Climate, Economics and Local Culture," at the 10th Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment July 3.

Publications

Peter Kaufman's (Sociology) article "Forming Identities in College: A Sociological Approach," was published in the August 2004 issue of Research in Higher Education, Vol. 45, No. 5. The article was co-written with Kenneth A. Feldman (SUNY Stony Brook).

Brian Obach (Sociology) published an article in Organization and Environment (September 2004) titled "New Labor: Slowing the Treadmill of Production?".

Howard Good (Communication & Media) has an article, "The Bard of Education," in the September 2004 issue of The American School Board Journal, available online at asbj.com. Good's article draws lessons for board members from Heraclitus's FRAGMENTS.

Linda Greenow's (Geography) review of the book "Historia social de una comunidad Tlaxcalteca: San Miguel de Aguayo (Bustamante, N.L.) 1686-1820," (Social History of a Tlaxcalteca Community: San Miguel de Aguayo (Bustamante, Nuevo Leon) 1686-1820) by Elisabeth Butzer, was published recently in the Journal of Latin American Geography (2003). The book was published by the University of Texas-Austin, the Archivo Municipal de Saltillo, the Instituto Tlaxcalteca de la Cultura, and the Presidencia Municipal de Bustamante, Mexico.

A. J. Williams-Myers (Black Studies) recently had his work, "Positioning and Imaging Caesar: From Margin to Center in the Historiography of Colonial New York City," published in the "Journal of Afro-Americans in New York Life and History," Vol. 28, No. 2 (July 2004): 51-75.
