President Steven Poskanzer and Pat Cinelli (white shirt), director of statewide facilities for the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, share the honor of cutting the ribbon at the Lenape Hall grand opening ceremony. Corinna Caracci (director of Residence Life) and Dave Rooney (vice president of Student Affairs) look on.

President Steven Poskanzer began with opening remarks, followed by comments from Corinna Caracci, director of residence life. Representatives from the construction firms were in attendance, as well as representatives from the campus planning and construction office, residence life and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.

Beginning Aug. 20, official Move-in Day, there will be four first-year-student living/learning communities that will be “clustered” on each floor of Lenape Hall. They will include the Honors Program, the Emerging Leaders Program, a first-year interest group of fine arts students, and a first-year interest group of B.S.D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) students.

“Each of these programs will give the students an opportunity to interact closely with their classmates outside of the classroom,” said Caracci. “They also help to ease the transition of first-year students to college life with the help of various types of support services.”

Lenape Hall’s completion highlights the university’s commitment to meet the growing demand from students for campus housing that accompanies the increasing retention rate (currently at 85 percent). It has also allowed the college to house 200 transfer students -- something it has not done for the last four years.

With the addition of Lenape Hall, New Paltz now has 13 residence halls on campus and a total of 2,800 beds available for student residents.
