Awards, Honors, Appointments and RecognitionDiego Dominici (Mathematics) was awarded the DiPrima prize at the 2004 annual meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, held July 12-16 in Portland, Oregon. Established in 1986, the Richard C. Diprima prize is awarded to a young scientist who has done outstanding research in applied mathematics. Mika Roinila (Geography) participated with 20 invited American-Canadians at the first CONNECT Seminar sponsored by the Canadian federal government and organized by Dr. J.-Andre Senecal of the University of Vermont and Dr. Chris Kirkey of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Canadian Studies Program. As a result of the one-week session held in Ottawa July 26-30, participants are recognized as CONNECT Scholars for their contribution and dissemination of Canadian content in American higher education. PublicationsHoward Good (Communication and Media) published “Wilderness Road,” a commentary on the need to reform school guidance, in the Aug. 11, 2004, issue of Education Week. Presentations & ExhibitionsSusan Ingalls Lewis (History) presented a paper, “Beyond Enterprising Women: The Importance of Networks for Female Microentrepreneurs in Mid- Nineteenth-Century Albany, New York,” at the Fiftieth Annual Meeting of the Business History Conference in Le Creusot, France, on June 18. Challenging both the image of Victorian women as completely dependent, and the current image of female entrepreneurs as largely independent, this paper explored interdependence between Albany’s 19th-century female proprietors, their families and the city’s business community. Mika Roinila (Geography) spoke on the progress of ongoing research on Finnish-Americans today at the Aug. 5 meeting of the Finnish-American Heritage Society in Canterbury, CT. Cynthia Dill (Art) will have a selection of oil paintings on display at the Woodstock Artists Association from Sept. 11- Oct. 3, titled “Cynthia Dill: Painted Journal.” Dill currently works as a part-time preparator at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. Other Interesting EndeavorsWAMC (Northeast Public Radio) has asked Beth E. Wilson (Art History) to provide arts commentary in a regular segment of its “Northeast Report” program. The segment will air the fourth friday of each month, at approximately 3:50 p.m. Tune in at 90.3 or 90.9 FM on Aug. 27 and Sept. 24 to hear the next two airings. |
