
Alumni in the NewsDenis Fred Simon ('74) has been appointed as founding provost and vice president of academic affairs for the new SUNY International Academic Program at the Levin Graduate Institute. Simon currently is dean of the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). As chief academic officer, Simon will be responsible for designing and building the Levin Graduate Institute's curricula and recruiting faculty. Simon, who will begin on July 1, holds a doctorate in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. in Asian studies from SUNY New Paltz. The institute, created by SUNY's Board of Trustees, will have a permanent home in Manhattan this year and will begin offering academic programs in 2005. PublicationsSue Books (Secondary Education) recently had her book, "Poverty and Schooling in the U.S.: Contexts and Consequences (2004)," published by Lawrence Erlbaum. Students in the NewsFor the second consecutive year, the SUNY New Paltz student chapter of the Society for Resource Management (SHRM), Management Association, has been awarded the 2003-2004 Superior Merit Award. The students earned a total of 2,550 points, which is 77 percent of the maximum total points chapters can receive. New Paltz is also one of the 16 chapters in the Northeast region to attain Superior Merit Award status. The SHRM represents the interests of more than 80,000 human resource professionals and student members from around the world. In April, two teams of six undergraduate students -- Josh Liff, Kimberly Bellarosa, Mohammed Zaman, Sara Green, Nicole Giordano, and Amanda Chapman -- represented the SHRM Management Association at the HR Games competition at Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. One team advanced to the semifinals and the other finished in the top half of all schools participating. The HR Games is an academic competition that allows students to answer human resource questions over several rounds in a Jeopardy-style game show format. Awards, Honors, Appointments & RecognitionThe first annual Mid-Hudson Technology Council's Scintilla Forum was held at the Terrace Restaurant on campus May 19. Engineering undergraduate students Stephen Schaller, Lauren Stapleton, Bekezela Dube and Michael Cancel were awarded second place at the forum for their senior design project "Self Navigating Artificial Intelligent Rover." The group's adviser is Yaser Khalifa (Electrical & Computer Engineering). Thirty students from New Paltz, Dutchess Community, Marist and Vassar colleges presented projects. Milton F. Ottesen (Professor Emeritus, Education) recently received the Composers Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He is also a member of the Art Society of Kingston (ASK). Anne R. Roschelle (Sociology) was awarded the 2004 Dolly Levin Mediation Award (by the Mediation Center of Dutchess County) for exemplifying a commitment to Peacemaking and Social Justice for her work with impoverished families and her community mediation. Judy Stanger ('93), associate executive director of the Orange County Crystal Run Village, recently received the Outstanding Community Service Award from Rehabilitation Support Services at its annual dinner in May. Stanger developed a partnership with local government entities to acquire nearly $6 million for housing for the homeless and established a seamless service delivery system. etceteraGlenn Geher (Psychology) and three students/alumni -- Heather Downey ('03), Kristin L. Renstrom ('04), and Juan Romero -- had their recent set of studies described in an article titled "Does Your Beau Beat Your Ex?" The article was published in the June (2004) issue of Psychology Today (Sussex Publishers). In MemoriamA memorial service was held on Friday, June 4, at the Reformed Church of New Paltz, for Dr. John "Jack" Burdick (School of Education) who died recently. Donations may be made in his name to the SUNY New Paltz Foundation to benefit students in secondary science education programs.
