Miraldi has taught journalism at SUNY New Paltz for the past 23 years. The Frank Luther Mott-Kappa Tau Alpha Journalism and Mass Communication Research Award has been given annually since 1944. The award, which is given for the best research-based book about journalism or mass communication published each year, will be presented to Miraldi on Aug. 5 in Toronto. Educational Opportunity Program to receive national award for retentionThe SUNY New Paltz Education Opportunity Program has been selected as one of four institutions to receive the Noel-Levitz 2004 Retention Excellence Award. Noel-Levitz, a consultation firm used by many colleges and universities for enrollment management solutions, began the Retention Excellence Awards Program in 1989 to honor the retention achievements of postsecondary institutions throughout the United States and Canada. Each year, awards are given to recognize the most successful, state-of-the-art retention programs in use at many kinds of institutions, with many different target groups of students. Nominees for awards are judged on identifiable and measurable institutional outcomes, originality and creativity, use of resources, and adaptability for use at other institutions. Winners are selected by a national panel comprised of leading campus-based retention practitioners. The New Paltz EOP program will receive the award at the 2004 National Conference on Student Retention on July 14 in New Orleans, La. The staff will also present a workshop at the national conference to allow other conference attendees to learn the valuable retention ideas that led to New Paltz’ success. Join the circus and perform under the big top this summer! The National Circus Project’s Summer Circus Academy will again be held for two weeks on the New Paltz campus this summer, from July 12-23; however, this year circus camp training will culminate in a circus performance under the “big top,” starring the camp participants at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24. For the first time in its six years at the college, the circus camp will be held under a real, outdoor bigtop circus tent, complete with center ring, located in the heart of campus on the Parker Quad. This camp is an intensive immersion in the world of circus training. Circus Academy coordinators and trainers are professional circus performers from around the world. The camp accepts participants ages 8 and up, and will teach juggling, unicycling, tumbling, clowning, stilt-walking, tightwire, aerials and much more in a non-competitive, physical atmosphere. The circus trainers also encourage adults to register for this professional circus camp training. For more information and to register, contact Jennifer Piren, at x3033 or e-mail pirenj@newpaltz.edu.
