
Presentations & ExhibitionsJohn Sharp (Geography) presented a paper, “The (re) Packaging of Cities in the Hudson Valley,” on March 17 at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Philadelphia. Jo Margaret Mano (Geography) and Linda Greenow (Geography) presented their research, “Image-making in America’s Communities in the Mid-Twentieth Century,” on March 18 in a poster session at the 100th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Philadelphia. Kristine Harris (History) presented a paper in April at the University of Chicago, as part of the symposium “Looking Modern: East Asian Visual Culture from the Treaty Ports to World War II.” Her paper, “Designs for Filming: Deco Style in Chinese Cinema,” explored modernist design in Shanghai and its social, aesthetic and political significance for Chinese filmmakers during the 1920s and 1930s. Pam Atkins (Psychological Counseling Center) presented the 14-Point Suicide Prevention Program in Syracuse recently, which she developed and implemented on the SUNY New Paltz campus. The presentation was a part of a panel, “College Student Suicide: Prevention Embedded within the Community,” at the SUNY Campus Safety Symposium: Maintaining and Enhancing the Campus Community: Preventing and Responding to Disruption held March 24-25. Alumni in the NewsTao Jie (MA English ’91) recently edited (with Zheng Bijun and Shirley L. Mow) “Holding Up Half the Sky: Chinese Women Past, Present, and Future,” which was published in April 2004 by Feminist Press, New York. PublicationsJonathan D. Raskin (Psychology) co-edited a recently published book with Sara K. Bridges (University of Memphis). The volume, “Studies in Meaning 2: Bridging the Personal and Social in Constructivist Psychology,” was published by Pace University Press in March 2004. Wenshan Jia (Communication & Media) recently published “The Rhetoric on Freedom of Expression in the Chinese Prodemocracy Movement: A Cross-Cultural Perspective” in Human Communication, a peer-reviewed English journal of The Pacific and Asian Communication Association, vol. 6 (1), 25-38. Kristine Harris (History) authored an article, “The Goddess: Fallen Woman of Shanghai,” analyzing the female iconography in Chinese silent film melodrama of the 1930s. Her article appears in the recently published book “Chinese Films in Focus,” edited by Chris Berry (London: British Film Institute, 2003). Howard Good (Communication & Media) has a poem, “Between the Wars,” in the May/June issue of Wilmington Blues, available online at www.wilmingtonblues.com. Sarah Wyman Cleaveland (English) published an article, “The Poem in the Painting: Roman Jacobson and the Pictorial Language of Paul Klee,” in the journal Word & Image, Vol. 20, No. 2 April-June, 2004. Chi-Yang Tsai (Business) presented a paper, titled “e-Curriculum On-Demand with IBM Virtual Lab,” co-authored with Andrew Pletch, Arthur Palmiotti, Gerri Pepper, Kevin Curley, and Chris Rohrbach (IBM) at 2004 Northeastern Decision Sciences Institute Conference, Atlantic City, March 24. Awards, Honors, Appointments & RecognitionJen Wait and Johnny Coxum (University Police) facilitated the “Drunk Busters” Stop DWI program at the New Paltz Middle School for more than 100 eigth-graders in April and May. This program allows students to wear goggles that simulate impaired vision caused by excessive drinking. While wearing the goggles, students try and “walk the line” and are taken through a number of other DWI tests that might occur on a DWI stop. Gweneth Lloyd (Psychological Counseling Center) will receive a Doctor of Social Welfare degree from The City University of New York at the June 2004 graduation. Dr. Lloyd’s dissertation is titled, “An Evaluation of the Impact and Effectiveness of the Scholar’s Mentorship Program.” S. Ilgu Ozler (Political Science) was awarded the 2004-2005 Research Grant in Comparative Studies of Modern Turkey by the Institute of Turkish Studies. The grant funds will be used to conduct research in Mexico and Turkey. |
