Academic calendars approved through '08

The president and the vice presidents have made the decision to retain the traditional calendar through academic year 2007/08, with the following minor modifications and supplements:

  • In the proposed traditional calendar for spring semester 2007, students were scheduled to attend classes for 10 weeks before spring break. It was felt this was educationally unsound. Following special consultation with the Academic Affairs Committee, a slightly different calendar has been adopted for this semester that places spring break in March. Consequently, for Spring 2007 only, classes will meet on Good Friday. Fortunately, because most Friday classes meet in the morning, those who wish to be home on Friday afternoon or evening can probably do so.
  • A diversity calendar was endorsed based on the Academic Affairs Committee's suggestion and it will be implemented.

In a recent memo sent to the campus community, President Steven Poskanzer wrote, "While there may be growing sentiment to change the calendar to reflect a more secular orientation, the requisite consensus to make such a change has not yet emerged. The wrenching and increasingly destructive debates I have heard about the calendar at our faculty meetings lead me to conclude that our community is best served at this time by retaining our traditional calendar."

In time, the president said he expects the campus community will revisit the policies and viewpoints that are reflected in the calendar. To read the complete memo to faculty and staff from the president, visit www.newpaltz.edu/president/ac.html.
