Presentations & Exhibitions

Bruce Milem (Philosophy) presented a paper, "Meister Eckhart as Platonist," at the annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of America in New York City on April 3. It was part of a panel on "Rethinking Plato and Platonism in European Thought and Literature."

Ron Knapp (Geography, Emeritus) presented a lecture, titled "In Search of China's Domestic Landscapes," on April 26. Earlier in the month, he spoke on "China's Old Dwellings" at Marist College's Center for Life Long Studies. On April 2-3, as part of a Getty Foundation symposium, "The Persistence of Traditions: Monuments and Preservation in Late Imperial and Modern China," at Columbia University, he presented a paper "(Re)Presenting Rural Heritage: The Preservation of China's Vernacular Landscapes."

Lourdes Giordani (Anthropology) presented "The Relevance of Anthropology When You are at the Margins: The Case of the Guaraní Ñandeva," at the 44th Annual Meeting of the Northeastern Anthropological Association, Dartmouth College, on March 26.

Alumni in the News

Edward J. Renehan Jr. (Political Science '80) had an audio edition of his book, "The Kennedys at War, 1937-1945," published by Recorded Books LLC, a division of Haights Cross Communications. Recorded Books also publishes an audio edition of Renehan's 1998 book, "The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War." Originally published by Doubleday in 2002, "The Kennedy's" will form the basis for a USA Networks television movie currently in development.

Awards, Honors, Appointments & Recognition

Harry Stoneback, director of graduate studies and Hemingway scholar in the Department of English, has been appointed by the State University of New York Board of Trustees as a Distinguished Teaching Professor. This appointment is the university's highest faculty designation. Elaine Hofstetter, an associate professor of Secondary Mathematics Education, has received a Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Tom Olsen and Pauline Uchmanowicz, who are both associate professors in the English Department, have received a Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Congratulations!

Students in the News

Kelly Fairweather (Senior, Psychology), Nilerisha Mollette (Senior, Psychology) and Uzoma Ugonabo (Sophomore, Biology) took first place in the Social Science category of this year's annual statewide C-STEP conference in Bolton Landing (April 16-18). Their research project, titled "Physiological Correlates of Perceptions of Parental Investment," was conducted in the summer of 2003 as part of a C-STEP grant with Glenn Geher (Psychology).

Stephanie Rogers and Sana Javaid (Communication & Media) presented their research poster presentations at the Eastern Communication Association 2004 Annual Conference in Boston (April 22-25). Rogers' paper is titled "Differences in Communication Patterns of East Asian and Western Cultures." Javaid's paper is titled "The Nonverbal Communication of President George W. Bush." The presentations are based on their papers for the Communication Research Methods class taught by Wenshan Jia (Communication & Media).

Publications

Diego Dominici (Mathematics) and Charles Knessl (UIC) published a research paper, titled "Asymptotic Analysis by the Saddle Point Method of the Anick-Mitra-Sondhi Model," in The Journal of Applied Mathematics and Stochastic Analysis, 2004:1 (2004) 19-71.

Henry Urbanski (Distinguished Service Professor of Russian) has published an essay on Joseph Brodsky in "Multicultural Writers Since 1945: An A to Z Guide" (Amoia and Knapp, eds., Greenwood Press, Westport CT, 2004). The compendium brings together 100 writers who either lived in another culture voluntarrily or were wrenched from one culture into another. Each entry includes a brief biography and discussion of multicultural themes in the writers work, a review of criticism, and primary and secondary bibliogrpahies.

Anne R. Roschelle and Peter Kaufman (Sociology) had their article "Fitting in and Fighting Back: Stigma Management Strategies Among Homeless Kids" published in the most recent issue of the journal "Symbolic Interaction."

Wenshan Jia (Communication & Media) co-authored with Shaorong Huang, "Symbolic Reconstruction of a Chinese Cultural Community: An Analysis of Jinglong Wang's Folk Painting Celebrating a Bumper Harvest," published in The Journal of Popular Culture, Vol. 37, No. 4., 2004 (pp. 683-693).
