Parking limited on Friday, April 16: HAB employees asked to use Rt. 32 lot

There will be limited parking on campus this Friday, April 16, the day of the President’s Inauguration, so employees will want to plan ahead.

Employees may want to park in the Route 32 Lot on Friday because all of the Haggerty Administration Building Lot (except handicapped locations) will be closed for guests from other colleges and universities who will attend the inaugural luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony and reception.

In addition, parking will be restricted in the Bouton Hall Circle, Old Main Circle and Haggerty Circle.

Please note that on both Thursday and Friday, the Wooster Science Building lot will be closed to parking because the inauguration reception tent will be erected there on Thursday and taken down on Saturday.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time and we look forward to seeing you at the festivities this week.

The Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Hillel at SUNY New Paltz and the Office of the President invite you to join in honoring Professor Gerald Sorin (History) for receiving The National Jewish Book Award in History for his book “Irving Howe: A Life of Passionate Dissent.”

The event will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in the Hopfer Admissions and Alumni Center. Sorin will briefly reflect on his work. A reception will follow.

Sorin’s book tracks Howe’s political career from his early days as an anti-Stalin activist in the 1930s to his involvement in the political revolutions of the 1960s and beyond. Howe was a Jewish intellectual who spent his entire adult life writing literary and political criticism.

The National Jewish Book Awards have been honoring notable works for more than 50 years, gaining status as a mark of excellence in both secular and religious communities. The awards heighten awareness of the best books on Jewish topics each year.

Sorin was recognized at the awards ceremony Dec. 11, 2003 at the Center for Jewish History in New York.

Donations being accepted for the Doron Chan Memorial Scholarship

To help honor Doron Chan, The SUNY New Paltz Foundation has established a fund in Doron’s memory.

Those interested in contributing to the Doron Chan Memorial Scholarship Fund should send their taxdeductible contributions to the SUNY New Paltz Foundation, HAB 501, with a note that it should be designated for this fund. Contributions can also be made at www.newpaltz.edu/gift. Please be sure to note “Doran Chan Scholarship Fund” in the “other” line.

Army Spec. Doron Chan, 20, of Highland, died March 18 near Balad, Iraq, when his convoy vehicle was cut off by a civilian vehicle, causing his vehicle to swerve and flip over. Chan was studying engineering and architecture at New Paltz when he was called to active duty three months ago.

When the campus learned of Doron’s death, the administration lowered the campus flags to half-staff for one week and held a candlelight vigil at 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, on the Student Union concourse. The event was attended by more than 50 campus administrators, faculty, and students. The vigil was sponsored by the Student Association and Synthesis.
