Susan Ingalls Lewis (History) presented a paper on “Business Widows” as part of “The Widows' Might,” a conference sponsored by The Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis on April 1- 3. Lewis spoke about the "Mighty Widows" of mid-19th century Albany, including Julia Ridgway, licensed plumber to the Albany waterworks, Jacobina Tietz, who sold pianos on the installment plan to customers of moderate means, and Catherine Blake, the African-American proprietress of the Kenmore Hotel -- as well as hundreds of "worthy" widows who supported themselves and their families through micro-entrepreneurship in the same period.

Publications

Howard Good (Journalism) has had a new book published, “Death of the Frog Prince,” by FootHills Publishing, Wheeler Hill, New York. The book is a 28-page hand-sewn chapbook. Good is the author of nine other books. This is his first chapbook of poetry.

Awards, Honors, Appointments, and Recognition

The College Student Personnel Association of New York State has presented Associate Vice President, Ray Schwarz (Student Affairs) with the 2003 Distinguished Service to Higher Education Award. This Award is presented annually to one educator whose ideas show considerable promise for improving the quality of the learning climate in post-secondary institutions. Schwartz is best known for his work in the area of substance abuse prevention, which has been recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Rose Rudnitski (Educational Administration) was recognized by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education on Feb. 10 for her outstanding leadership and service to the association’s program for excellence in teacher education.

This Kurt Matzdorf-created Hanukkah Menorah is on display in the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany.

The Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, has acquired two works by Kurt J. Matzdorf, professor emeritus of gold and silversmithing and founder of the metals program in the Art Department of New Paltz. One is a set of Torah ornaments in sterling silver and acrylic, and the other is a sterling silver Hanukkah Menorah with nine figures in double-sided low relief, titled “Martyrs and Heros in the Fight for Freedom.”

Athletic Accolades

Former SUNY New Paltz swimmer and long-time assistant coach Dan Talleyrand will take over as head coach of men’s swimming for the 2004-05 season. Talleyrand, who assisted with both the men’s and women’s programs from 1998-2004, will replace Brian Williams who served as head coach of men’s and women’s swimming from 1993-2004. Williams will remain the women’s head coach and will continue to serve as associate director of athletics.

Recently, the SUNY New Paltz Department of Athletics sent five student-athletes and Colleen A. Bruley (Senior Women Administrator) to the Bacchus & Gamma Peer Education Network Area 11 Spring Conference in Western Pennsylvania at Allegheny College. The five students included Danielle Herring (Women’s Soccer), Jennifer Larson (Women’s Tennis), Tyler Clements, John Hauser, and Matt Irwin (Men’s Basketball). The weekend included educational sessions and speakers who talked about how to be a good peer educator, and the benefits they can have on every college campus. On the second day the students were trained and certified as Certified Peer Educators.
