Gala Celebrating New Paltz to continue Nov. 21

Mark your calendars for Nov. 21, 2004. Building on the success of the “Celebrating New Paltz,” inaugural gala evening at Mohonk Mountain House last November, the steering committee is already planning this year’s event. In addition to increasing the scholarship endowment for a New Paltz resident, the second annual gala will focus on “educating minds and bodies,” in support of the SUNY New Paltz recreation program and the “Field of Dreams” project for the Town of New Paltz. Call Karl Rodman, gala chair, for additional information at 255-1955.

Spotlight on research

Academic Affairs has launched a new Web site designed to spotlight the research and creative efforts of faculty, staff and students. The site makes the members of the SUNY New Paltz community more visible and accessible to those from both inside and outside the campus. It highlights opportunities for undergraduate involvement in research, the Student Research Symposium and Graduate Student Research and Creative Award grants. Information regarding internal grant programs for faculty is accessible through the site as well as information regarding the Chancellor's Awards honoring faculty research and scholarship. The site may be accessed directly at www.newpaltz.edu/research, and through the Research and Creative Activity link on the New Paltz Academics & Library page at www.newpaltz.edu/academics.

New Paltz sends "lobby" team to Albany

A six-member delegation from SUNY New Paltz traveled to Albany last week to meet with local legislators and to advocate on behalf of the college and its budget.

The group of three students and three administrators took part in SUNY Lobbying Day on March 9 along with representatives from the SUNY System’s 12 other comprehensive colleges and eight agricultural and technical schools. The group had appointments with the campus’s local legislators, state Sen. John Bonacic and Assemblyman Kevin Cahill ('77). They also attended meetings with the chairmen of the Higher Education Committees in both the state Senate and Assembly. The group advocated for restoration of funding to the Educational Opportunity Program, an increase in operating funds for the campus, no changes to the Tuition Assistance Program and smaller, incremental tuition increases instead of spikes such as last year’s tuition hike.

With Cahill, the group discussed a specific state appropriations request to replace the 33-year-old sound system in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Student Union Building. Group members included students John Cormier, vice president for finance, Student Association; Christine Sweeney, vice president, Residence Hall Student Association; and Stephanie Rivieccio, national communication coordinator, Residence Hall Student Association. The administrators were L. David Rooney, vice president for student affairs, Ray Schwarz, associate vice president for student affairs, and Shelly Wright, executive assistant to the president.

SUNY Mission Review returns to campuses

The campus is about to embark on Round II of Mission Review, a goal-setting/measurement process administered by SUNY System in which each campus demonstrates its effectiveness in objective terms through appropriate benchmarks and peer comparisons. Provost David Lavallee will lead the project. Mission Review II, which measures the period 2005-2010, will build on the success of Mission Review I, which examined student quality and diversity, retention and graduation rates, among other benchmarks. During Round I, the President's Cabinet, the Office of Institutional Research, the Presiding Officer of the Faculty, Rose Rudnitski, and Gerald Benjamin, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, prepared the college’s response. This time, President Steven Poskanzer has decided to make the effort more collaborative by including three faculty and professional staff representatives.

The Working Group includes the President’s Cabinet members, Dan Kempton (English), Barbara Petruzzelli (Library), and Barbara Hardgrave (Music), and administrators Gerald Benjamin, and Kelli Parmley, director of the Office of Institutional Research.
