Awards, Honors, Appointments, and Recognition

Arnaldo Mejias (Advisor, Educational Opportunity Program) was recently sworn in to serve as a member of the City of Kingston's Commission on Human Rights. In January, Kingston Mayor James Sottile appointed Mejias to serve until December 2005. According to the City's Web site (www.ci.kingston.ny.us), "the Commission on Human Rights is responsible for receiving complaints of alleged discrimination because of race, creed, color or national origin." The Commission is actively "reducing and eliminating such alleged discrimination through the process of conference, conciliation, and persuasion..." Mejias has lived in Kingston for more than two years.

Publications

Yaser Khalifa (Electrical and Computer Engineering ) presented and published the paper titled "Isomorphism Elimination to Enhance Design Centering of Analog Circuits Using Genetic Algorithms and the Regionalization Method," at the IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems Dec. 14-17, 2003.

Students in the News

Josephine Deckert and Susan Staples were awarded the Diana Dolgin Nursing Scholarship. The award will presented at the Greater New York March of Dimes Perinatal Nurses Conference on Tuesday, March 23, during the conference luncheon in New York City.

Other Interesting Endeavors

Jamie Bennett (Art) traveled to Munich, Germany with 11 Metal MFA students and four MFA alumni to attend Schmuck (German for Jewelry) 2004, March 2-9. Events included the opening of the Neue Pinakothek der Moderne (Modern Museum) Danner Collection of Contemporary Jewelry, the Internationale Handwerksmesse Munchen (International Handcrafts Exhibition, Munich) numerous lectures and gallery openings.

Presentations & Exhibitions

Max Lydy (Theatre Arts) recently served as scenic designer and technical director for "The Diary of Anne Frank" at St. Bart's Playhouse in New York City. This production received an outstanding review in The New York Times. The production ran from Feb. 12-22. He also served as technical consultant for "Cooking With Lard" at the Here Theatre complex in New York City.

Robin Arnold (Art) has work included in the following exhibitions: "The Figure Now," at the Westport Arts Center in Connecticut from March 2-April 23; "Masquerade: Roles Women Play," at the Smithtown Arts Council on Long Island from March 20-April 17; and "Artists in the Studio: 30 Years at the Millay Colony for the Arts," at Albany International Airport Gallery from Jan. 1-Aug. 1.

Peter Kaufman (Sociology) presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society in New York City, Feb. 19-22. Laura Coffey, Sean Endress, and Margaret Griffin, all graduate students in sociology, also presented papers at this conference.

Wilma Feliciano (Spanish) was invited (by the Hillwood Museum on the campus of C. W. Post College in Brookville, Long Island,) to lecture in February about religious theater in Peru as part of the college's exhibition of pre-Hispanic Peruvian art. Her presentation, "Spectacles of Religiosity: Sacred Festivals in Peru," was sponsored by the New York State Council of the Humanities Speakers Bureau. Subsequently, she presented the same lecture at the SUNY New Paltz Honors Center in March.

Anne R. Roschelle (Sociology) gave a guest lecture for Women's History Month at Orange County Community College. Her talk, "Contested Terrain: Social Perspectives on Women's Bodies," was part of the Lyceum series "What Women Do," sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities.

Alumni in the News

Paul Bradley (Theatre Arts '03) is the technical director for "The Orwell Project," which is in production at the Connelly Theatre in New York City. Max Lydy (Theatre Arts) served as technical consultant for the production.
